Greetings!
| Vanessa Marano and Katie Leclerc with Sheila Jacobs, Double Pride, on the set of "Switched at Birth" |
Happy Spring!
A highlight recently for me has been the opportunity to be on the set of "Switched at Birth" to see history in the making. It is so wonderful that these talented actors are continuing to bring deaf and hearing sibling stories to a wider audience all across America. I was especially excited about the episode in ASL which aired on March 4. Read Jace Lacob's article about this episode and how it relates to the Deaf President Now protest at Gallaudet!
Congratulations to "Switched at Birth" for winning a Peabody Award!
More exciting news below. We look forward to collaborating with you in various ways for the success of our new generation of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students AND THEIR HEARING FAMILIES!
Warmest regards,
Sheila Jacobs, MFT

"As a coda when I left home to go to college, I never dreamed that I was leaving my mother tongue. It never dawned on me that there wouldn't be deaf people where I was going and that ASL would be nowhere in sight. Never were my eyes so lonely..."

Buddy and Bernice Singleton at the NAD Town Hall Meeting Apache ASL Trails Deaf Senior Housing, Tempe, Arizona
Apache ASL Trails facility in Tempe is facing discrimination charges. The U.S. Department of Housing (HUD) says that is too many hard of hearing residents and they need to have more minority groups living there. "It's so funny they think we are discriminating," said resident and complex manager Linda Russell. "We are the ones who know what it's like to be discriminated against."

Hearing Parent and Double Pride Volunteer Tura Franzen Speaks Out
In the last newsletter I talked about what it was like for me raising my Deaf son. And how I saw 'the lights go on' as he went from being a quiet, shy kid at a mainstreamed school into an athlete, thespian, student life counselor, and a good student to boot at CSD,Fremont. He is now 44 years old, a successful architect and happily married with two fantastic children!
It's still painful to realize that we both lost a lot regarding "communication" by not learning ASL earlier. My son has many years of "memories with no words" that we are now going over and discussing and this is really good.
But language deprivation is something that can be avoided and it takes years to overcome and sometimes has permanent damage. I am hoping to help families not lose precious time - parents who are in the position I was when my son was first diagnosed who need help thinking about their Deaf child's language and educational choices.
If I could do things over again, I would have taken ASL more seriously in the beginning. These days it's so much more accessible with the internet. If parents learn to sign along with their child, the child sees that they are very important and it's such a great way to teach English or Spanish. It's fun and visual and gives everyone a boost!
A few months ago I volunteered at the Family Fun Weekend organized by the Outreach Department of California School for the Deaf. I met many new families who were exploring this new venue for their Deaf child. It gave me such hope for the future. Parents helping parents with many avenues to choose from. YAY!

The Annual Early Hearing Detection & Intervention Conference was held in Glendale, Arizona in April. A highlight was the panel of Gallaudet students who had grown up with cochlear implants, moderated by the wonderful Dr. Beth Benefict, Professor of Communications and Researcher at the Visual Language and Visual Learning Center at Gallaudet. Dr. Benedict has been building bridges and providing Early Childhood Education leadership for ten years. Another highlight was keynote speaker Dr. Laura-Ann Petitto Scientific Director of the Brain and Language Laboratory at Gallaudet. Her talk was entitled "How the Human Child Discovers Language: New Insights from the Neural Foundations of Language, The Bilingual Brain, and the Visual Phonological Mind". We need more Deaf presenters to bring your expertise to the 2014 Conference. This Conference brings together various groups who work with Deaf children - medical providers, Early Childhood Education educators and the Deaf Community. We want to partner and collaborate in new ways and build bridges.
