Here comes the sun ... but are you ready? |
It's spring, almost summer, and everyone is clamoring for the warmth and cheeriness that comes with the sun as outdoor activities ramp up! However, it's not all cheery when it comes to the effects of sun exposure, especially for those with lupus.
The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization have identified broad spectrum UV as a human carcinogen. UV radiation (including UVA and UVB rays) is the main factor responsible for skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and possibly melanoma.
In addition to these risks, for those individuals with lupus, sun exposure can intensify existing symptoms or lead to skin rashes or a lupus flare. In addition, a number of medications taken for lupus may increase one's sensitivity to the sun. |

Lupus Food and Wine Classic paired fun and fundraising |
For the third year, Minnesota wineries and top Twin Cities restaurants came together at the Mall of America to raise funds for the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota. Approximately 300 guests attended the May 1 event and had the opportunity to sample and sip while enjoying musical entertainment by Jimmi and the Band of Souls, bid on auction items and make selections from the new wine wall. "(LFM has) introduced me to so many terrific people in the last few weeks," wrote one guest, following the event. "LFM has truly been a wonderful resource for me and last night it was obvious just how many people you have helped and lives you have touched." A special thank you to all our restaurants, wineries, sponsors, silent auction donors and guests for making the night a success.
Our Facebook album contains a handful of event photos. See if you can spot your friends, tag those you know and relive the evening.

Early application is encouraged. For additional information and an application, contact Cheryl Como via email or 952-746-5151.
