Bermuda's Johnny Barnes, "Mr. Happy," dies at 93
Johnny Barnes waved to morning commuters in Hamilton_ Bermuda for 30 years.
John James "Johnny" Barnes, Bermuda's "Mr. Happy" died Sabbath, July 9, 2016, in Hamilton, Bermuda. He was 93 years old. Barnes was a beloved figure on the island and around the world. Known for his cheery waves, kind greetings, and prayers for commuters passing through the busy Crow Lane roundabout, Barnes was honored by the island in 1998 with a commemorative bronze statue.

Barnes was born June 23, 1923, in St. Kitts. He worked for the railway system in Bermuda during the 1940s and later became a bus driver. He began smiling and waving to drivers coming through the roundabout in 1986 from early morning to 10:00 a.m. each day and continued this tradition, rain or shine, for 30 years.

Kenneth Manders, Bermuda Conference president and Barnes' former pastor told the Royal Gazette newspaper reporter: "His ministry has blessed people who were in need of prayer in the early morning. He was a Christian man and always tried to show the love of God and demonstrated that to all of mankind. He will be sadly missed."

Barnes, is survived by his wife since 1949, Belvina. Barnes' widow shared a message with his admirers on July 10 that Barnes wrote prior to his death: "My mind and heart would have liked to continue at the roundabout forever, sharing love, cheerfulness, happy wishes, and prayers with each of you. However, our loving heavenly Father knows best, so He said, 'Johnny, it is time for you to rest.' "

Appeal to Seventh-day Adventists Worldwide from Ted Wilson
Ted Wilson, Adventist Church president
Ted Wilson issues an appeal to Adventists to stand as "beacons of spiritual light."

"As we view the societal landscape of the world, it is becoming more and more violent.

"Very recently--from South Sudan to the United States to Bangladesh to Iraq to Turkey and on and on--it appears that the winds of strife have increased and heated to the point of boiling over. Innocent and unsuspecting people have been terribly affected. I have prayed for these places, families involved and the various situations.

"Although we do not wish to be alarmists and must maintain heaven-inspired balance, trust and hope, it seems as if the world is increasingly disintegrating on a daily basis. Although we know that these types of difficulties and tragedies will become more commonplace at the end of time, we need to stand as beacons of spiritual light and anchors of moral influence at a time of rampant uncertainty."

More than a 1,000 Seventh-day Adventists gathered in Washington, D.C., last weekend to pray, mourn and acknowledge the killing of two black American men and five Dallas police officers.

Several Adventist Church leaders, including Daniel R. Jackson, president of the North American Division, and G. Alexander Bryant, the division's executive secretary, denounced the killings during the Washington march. "The church is called to speak truth to power, no matter how unpopular or how inconvenient. ... Many are now asking the question, what should we do? What should the church do? What would Jesus do? Jesus is not here today, but through us, He left us a formula and the formula is love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them who despitefully use you."

Ministering in the Face of Tragedy
"Tragedy is a fact of life. In the past year, terrorist bombings, active shooter incidents in schools and churches, and natural disasters occurring worldwide claimed many lives and critically injured more. As ministry leaders, we cannot shield ourselves or our congregations from heartbreak," wrote Asheley Woodruff, a licensened clinical counselor and writer, in a special reprint by Adventist Risk Management of an article that originally appeared in the April/June 2016 quarterly issue of the Elders' Digest.

"Ministry leaders are primary points of contact for the bereaved. When a tragedy occurs, church leaders provide emotional support and spiritual guidance for those who experience loss."
