Hello & welcome to the new version of our e-newsletter! As we prepare to celebrate our nation's independence this weekend, let us reflect on the words of one of our founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson:

May this information help your conscience guide you in the right direction. RDA strives to bring you the latest news and action points, so that collectively, we can work towards making a positive difference for our environment, our communities, and future generations.

Lack of Knowledge
Leaves Us Powerless
By Jesse White, State Representative, 46th District

In 1597, English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon coined the famous phrase "knowledge is power." Several incidents from the past month, which have caught the attention of many in the community, bring new meaning to the quote from more than 500 years ago.

On May 1, families living near the Carter wastewater impoundment in Mt. Pleasant Township discovered a large container labeled "radioactive" close to their homes. A state Department of Environmental Protection inspector told residents there had been a spill of radioactive water near "weir tanks," which were set up next to the impoundment to separate solid particles from the water and chemical mixture used to hydraulically fracture the gas-containing shale. A DEP spokesman later denied that any spill had taken place, and the radioactive material remains in the container at the impoundment site.

Retired PA Health Staffers Say Department Muzzled them on Fracking
The Pulse - June 19, 2014 Options

Two retirees from the Pennsylvania Department of Health say its employees were silenced on the issue of Marcellus Shale drilling. One veteran employee says she was instructed not to return phone calls from residents who expressed health concerns about natural gas development.

"We were absolutely not allowed to talk to them," said Tammi Stuck, who worked as a community health nurse in Fayette County for nearly 36 years. Another retired employee, Marshall P. Deasy III, confirmed that.

Deasy, a former program specialist with the Bureau of Epidemiology, said the department also began requiring field staff to get permission to attend any meetings outside the department. This happened, he said, after an agency consultant made comments about drilling at a community meeting.

In the more than 20 years he worked for the department, Deasy said, "community health wasn't told to be silent on any other topic that I can think of."

In light of this story, Berks Gas Truth, a grassroots community organization, has created the following survey. They are asking that all Pennsylvanians who contacted PA DOH with adverse health impacts that are linked to fracking-related water, air and land contamination fill out a short survey they will then provide to interested agencies and elected officials.

If you have some information to report, please CLICK HERE to take the survey.

Cove Point Rally
Come join us on July 13th as we head down to Washington D.C. to oppose this LNG export nightmare!

In all, FERC is currently reviewing 14 fracked gas export proposals. The $3.8 billion Cove Point facility, proposed by Virginia-based Dominion Resources, just 50 miles south of the White House in southern Maryland, would take gas from Marcellus wells, liquefy it, and ship it to customers in Japan and India. A CCAN Analysis found that, from fracking wells to final smokestacks, the Cove Point project alone could trigger more greenhouse gas pollution than all seven of Maryland's existing coal-fired power plants combined.

The Cove Point project would be the first fracked gas export facility on the East Coast and the first ever built in a densely populated residential area. According to economist Deborah Rogers, approval of LNG exports would drastically increase the number of gas wells in PA, as producers would be bound by contract to meet foreign demands.

Urge President Obama to halt the Approval of LNG Export Terminals

Right now, communities across the country are facing air, water, and climate pollution at the hands of natural gas companies. And the stakes have gotten even higher -- the potential for more fracking so the natural gas industry can export LNG to other countries.

PA Moratorium Petition
Request a Moratorium on Further Leasing of our State Park and Forest Land

Our state forests are rare places that provide respite and recreation for our citizens. The proposed lift on the moratorium of gas leasing will lead to further drilling that will jeopardize fragile ecosystems. Our state forests and parks should be set apart, protected and held in trust for the future.

We need your help to stop additional gas leasing of state park and forest land. We urge you to please take action by sending a message to your legislators so the General Assembly will not open the door to additional leasing.
