DEP Asked to Supersede
Tennessee Gas Pipeline Permits

In a December 18, 2012 legal filing, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Environmental Hearing Board was asked to issue an Order of Supersedeas that would prevent the Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company from proceeding with mobilization and tree clearing. The Delaware Riverkeeper Network and Responsible Drilling Alliance filed the petition, essentially a request for a stay of construction activity, together with their notices of appeal of three DEP permits issued for the project, in order to allow the groups enough time to pursue their legal challenge while maintaining the status quo.

Ralph Kisberg, Board President of the Responsible Drilling Alliance states:  "As with all aspects of shale resource development, the permitting system is designed for approval and heavily weighted in favor of industry, in good part due to their technical nature. Community concerns are basically given lip service. It is therefore extremely important all legal reviews are completed before any work on the ground commences. We have a supply glut of shale gas at this time. There is no need to hurry this project except that pipeline projects are a very profitable business."

#1 Keep it Wild Campaign

Last summer RDA launched the Keep it Wild campaign to protect Rock Run, its watershed, and the Old Loggers Path trail from industrial development. Over 200 people attended the campaign kick-off in Ralston. Thousands more wrote to DCNR Secretary Richard Alan asking him to protect the special place from shale gas extraction.

RDA established a Land Conservation Committee to inventory other special places and support our official position of no more State Forest leasing. RDA is sponsoring a Keep it Wild hike in the Devil's Elbow Natural Area this Saturday, December 29, at 11 am. For more information see the flier at the bottom of this newsletter. #2 Trees Bring Smiles to Students at
Wyalusing Elementary School
In response to Chesapeake Energy's presentation to elementary school students touting the benefits of natural gas, Responsible Drilling Alliance spent two days at Wyalusing Elementary School teaching kids about fossil fuels, gas drilling, and renewable energy.

#3 Australian Greens Visit Pine Creek
Hoping to learn from Pennsylvania's mistakes, Australians from the Lock the Gate Alliance along with Jeremy Buckingham of the Greens Party legislative council visited Pine Creek on an RDA-guided tour of the gas industry's landscape impacts.

#4 US Senate Staffers Consult RDA

US Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources staffers came to Williamsport to separate frack rumor from fact. In order to be better informed during contract negotiations for drilling on Bureau of Land Management territory, Senate staff traveled to Williamsport to meet with industry and environmental representatives.

#5 The Health Impacts of Fracking
RDA co-sponsored a presentation by Wilma Subra, MacArthur Genius Award-winning scientist. Subra's talk on the health impacts of shale gas development included information on keeping detailed records of environmental hazards noted and any physical symptoms experienced as a result of gas development activities.
