Ask Lab Researcher Iain Walker About Home Energy Efficiency, and He'll Provide Answers

Do you have questions about home energy efficiency? Ask Berkeley Lab's Iain Walker. He has more than 20 years of experience studying energy use in residential buildings. Iain will answer a few of your questions in a follow-up video to be posted on our YouTube channel Feb. 15. Tweet your questions with #AskBerkeleyLab. A Clock That Will Last Forever

Imagine a clock that will keep perfect time forever, even after the heat-death of the universe. This is the "wow" factor behind a device known as a "space-time crystal," a four-dimensional crystal that has periodic structure in time as well as space. More>

Studying Human Behavior to See How  People Can be Persuaded to Use Less Energy

If your utility company challenged you to use less energy than your neighbors, would you respond? How would you decide whether to buy a more expensive refrigerator that consumes significantly less energy? Lab researchers are also looking at human behavior and decision making as a key factor in reducing energy consumption. More>

Squeezing Helps Revert Breast Cancer Cells

UC Berkeley and Berkeley Lab researchers have put the squeeze - literally - on malignant mammary cells to guide them back into a normal growth pattern. The findings show that mechanical forces alone can revert and stop the growth of cancer cells. This change happens even though the genetic mutations responsible for malignancy remain. More>

[SF Chronicle] Couches throughout the nation have become notorious for containing flame-retardant chemicals that may do more harm than good. Now, it turns out, those chemicals may also be leaching from the walls that surround you. Because of laws passed in the 1970s, many homes and workplaces built in the United States since then contain foam insulation doused with flame retardants. Not only are these substances potentially hazardous, but they also often do not make a structure any safer from fire. More>

Berkeley Lab researcher Jay Keasling is profiled in CNN's "The Next List" program, which explores his pioneering research in the field of synthetic biology and the engineering microbes to produce biofuels, medicines, and other products from simple ingredients like sugar cane and grass. More>

[SF Chronicle] In a tidy white lab, Berkeley Lab scientists are trying to duplicate one of nature's greatest tricks, pulling energy out of thin air. They're designing artificial leaves that can convert sunlight, carbon dioxide and water into chemical fuel, much like the photosynthesis of flowers and trees. The team has already built a crude prototype from silicon, polymers and platinum that can create a simple and clean hydrogen fuel. If the scientists figure out how to cheaply produce more complicated energy sources, it would enable mass production of "drop-in" fuels that could power automobiles, trucks, planes and ships without pumping more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. More>

Lab Hosts Family Science Night in Richmond

More than 240 children and parents from Washington Elementary School in Point Richmond enjoyed an evening of science provided by Berkeley Lab and school volunteers last month. The multipurpose room at the school was transformed into a Bubble Festival where participants explored making bubbles with straws, strings, and even their own bodies. Washington's Family Science Night is one of several planned for schools that will be nearest neighbors to the proposed Richmond Bay Campus.

Local High Schools Participate in Regional Science Bowl at Lab

Bay Area students came to the Lab earlier this month to battle in a regional Department of Energy Science Bowl. Science Bowl is a nationwide academic competition that tests students' knowledge in all areas of science. High school and middle school students are quizzed in a fast paced question-and-answer format similar to Jeopardy. After a day of intense competition, Palo Alto emerged as the winner, followed by Lowell (San Francisco), Albany, and Northgate (Walnut Creek). Palo Alto will travel to Washington D.C. in late April to compete in the national competition.

Scientist Shares Challenges of Research in the Wild Amazon

Jeff Chambers' path to the Amazon forest started 20 years ago in an unlikely place: Livermore, California. Since then, he has bushwhacked through dense woodland, traveled hundreds of miles down jungle rivers, had close encounters with the world's most painful ant and near misses with deadly snakes - all in the name of science. 'Godfather' of Energy Efficiency Gets National Medal From Obama

Art Rosenfeld of Berkeley Lab's Environmental Energy and Technologies Division, long considered the god father of energy efficiency, received a National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Obama this month. The National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation represent the highest honors for achievement in science and technology bestowed by the President of the United States.
