Michael Bogden, FlashLantern, & Illuminating Videos
You never know when life illuminates a path, for Michael Bogden, his love of camping offered the inspiration to provide the world a innovative lighting product. Michael's camping equipment used to include a large wall tent and a marine cooler filled with traditional lanterns. But MIchael grew tired of the bulk of the lanterns and their fuel, and grew weary of replacing globes, mantles and bulbs. Unfortunately, the large interior space of his tent made the existing small LED lanterns useless. But he was impressed with the power of the newest generation of LED flashlights, even while their light was directional. Michael also noted that all lanterns were designed with all the breakable and bulky components of traditional lanterns. "I guess the theory was "if it doesn't look like a lantern, nobody will buy it."
So he spent the 2009 camping season designing a different approach to lighting. The result of his efforts is the FlashLantern.
Directing the bright LED's down onto a reflecting cone, the FlashLantern turns a tight spotlight into a room filling lantern casting it's light all around.
Since Sheri and Michael Bogden moved to Island Park ID, they have started a video blog (vlog), documenting the experiences they are having as they become more in the wilderness lifestyle. It is listed as "Base Camp with Mike and Sheri". including a video which describes a very "illuminating" Contest:

Teaching Kids to Stay Safe and Stable Through an Earthquake
from www.homesecurity.org
How do you talk with your kids about natural disasters? Or do you avoid the topic and hope for the best? The right safety instructions can help your children live through the worst events, but too much information or, for that matter, misinformation can cause confusion and panic. Balance your information properly and help your kids protect themselves from potential disasters like earthquakes. If you live in a quake-prone environment, start today with basic lessons. An education on earthquakes and a well-designed safety plan can mean a life or death difference for kids, especially for young children.
Describe earthquakes before you start teaching safety. Even knowing the basics behind how earthquakes work can help children stay calm; they can then make smart decisions when a quake hits. Choose simple lessons based on how old, interested, and understanding each kid is. After they generally understand earthquakes, move on to safety lessons. READ MORE

SURVIVAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES
I keep a list of Survival and Collapse medical supplies, that includes natural remedies. We include natural remedies for first use or back up to save on items that won't be produced in an austere setting. Dr.Bones and I spend a lot of time and energy researching "back-up" plans for traditional medicine. We want you to have the ability to provide medical help in a disaster scenario, and for that, you'll need conventional medical supplies and some knowledge on what natural remedies are useful for certain situations. Some items missing from this list are commonly found in most medical ktis. Unfortunately, chest decompression kits and ambu-bags are of limited help without a hospital to transfer the patient to. I would concentrate on the supplies you will need most and will likely be able use without too much training. You will still have the ability to deal with 90% of the medical emergencies you will encounter in times of trouble. Follow this link to a very ambitious list of things you should consider...

3 Tips For Working In The Cold
by Marjory Wildcraft
As you start to live more sustainability you will be spending more time outdoors. And in the winter it can be tough. Getting or cutting firewood, tending livestock, taking care of the orchards or greenhouse - all of these activities means you'll be getting outside in the cold.
Here are my three best tips for staying warm and toasty during the winter months.
1) Wrap that neck! Your neck radiates more heat than any other area. The head and feet are next on the list, but really the neck is the most important. In my backpack (which serves as a purse) I've used the neck wrap I keep in there more times than I can count to keep me warm during that sudden cold front that sweeps in.
You know when you start to get that scratchy throat and start feeling just the edges of a cold or flu coming on? I will wrap my neck at night while I sleep and have found it seems to nip that sore throat in the bud. I am no doctor, but my theory is that wrapping my neck creates a mini fever in the area, which stops trouble before it can spread.
2) Stay hydrated. For some reason it seems harder to drink enough fluids when it is cold. But of the many signs of dehydration, getting a bit chilled is usually one of the first. (Some other signs are dry lips, dizziness when standing, and slower mental functioning). I find that making a quart of tea to sip on (from a mason jar) in the morning and then in the afternoon, helps me to drink more and keep track of how much I am drinking during the day. I find my body hydrates better with a tea versus straight water. The Grandmothers were always drinking herbal teas that were nutritive and tonics. Good health is best achieved with gentle nudges and sipping tea is a great way to help the process. Wildcrafting or growing your own teas is so easy and I'll write about it in a future article.
3) Have a warm place to go. I picked this tip up when I got my permaculture certification more than a decade ago. It is a lot easier to go out and face the cold if you have a warm place to come back to. It doesn't have to be a large room, or the whole house. But knowing that when you come back in there will be somewhere warm gives you a psychological boost that I've relied on so many years I don't think about going out without setting this up first. Before you dress up and head out throw a few logs on the fire and set flue so you'll have a warm spot to come back to. If you are not heating with wood, perhaps you might run a tiny heater in a small room to have a 'warm area' to return to. It might as simple as the greenhouse that you setup and keep warm. But knowing you have a warm spot to come back to after working outside in the cold is vitally important. And you never know. If you have an accident outside, having a warm space to work is case of emergency may be crucial to your survival.
