Featured Story
Twas the night before Doomsday...
by Robert Hawkins
...and all over the world ,everyone was sayin' "The END has unfurled!'  "There' is no tomorrow...the end is in sight!" "What lays ahead is a TERRIBLE FRIGHT!"

But safe in their bed's all snuggled and warm, are Preppers who rest, assured there's no harm. For deep in their slumber, so safe where they lay, they gain blessed peace, to face each new day.

Efforts to prepare, independence from without, is always in mind, in Preppers, no doubt. They look to tomorrow, as a bright futures reach, and in knowing of how, for others they teach.

And while each new day, rises up into view, all Preppers will know what exactly to do. "Keep hope in tomorrow, it's the course that is best, without it, no effort may pass any test."

Apology's to "Twas the night before Christmas" author Clement Clarke Moore. But I'm just offering a bit of holiday cheer to ward off the slings & darts now being lobbed at any mention of Doomsday, or of Preppers in general. It's been a wild week, the hysterics of media attack upon Preppers, the attempt to fit a warped theory on a tragic event, and capped off with the biggest BOOGY MAN story of 'em all, this time wearing ancient Mayan Indian garb.

What's really ironic, in an attempt to cast an image of evil, the storytellers selling their tales, completely turn around the very essence of what motivates anyone proud of calling themselves "Prepper". The essence of perpetual optimism. Optimism is THE "Power Source". It makes one prepare a pantry of can goods or build a solar array. It's hope for tomorrow more than any asteroid or brain-crazed zombie, as would most media reports would say otherwise.

You see, while end of the world scenarios motivate in the abstract, it's a sucker bet to rely on it as a sure thing. It too often leads to let-down and dissolution when the end doesn't come. Worse yet, it's Chicken Little, who drives the flock into ignoring his sky is falling claims, who then suffers when a real disaster comes calling.
End of the World is not what Prepping is all about, (at least with the APN).

On the contrary, Preppers are more like Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, defiantly claiming "...tomorrow is another day!" We are eternal optimists. It's why we strive for self-reliance and self sufficiency, so we CAN see the dawn of tomorrow.

And as for the other prepper mantra, "SHTF". You'd be surprised to know that "SHTF" happens all the time, each day, every day. "SHTF" is when you pump $3.50 gas in your car, or stand in line and pay more today for what you could buy yesterday, it's opening up the pay envelope and finding a pink slip...THAT'S the real motivation to prepare to be as self-reliant, self-suficient as you can be.

...so as the night turns to day and Holdays draw near, have my best wishes and good prepping, for everyone so dear!

Doomsday in the Great Lakes Bay: Professional prepper brings groups together in a crisis

Even if the world keeps revolving after Friday, Dec. 21, there are still plenty of reasons for Great Lakes Bay Region residents to be prepared, just in case.

The American Preppers Network (APN) talks through those reasons, informing the public using group interactions and social media platforms, said Tom Martin, the founder and vice-president. READ MORE

Powdered Milk For Your Preps; Which One Should I Pick and Why?

Mentioning powdered milk often gets a curl of the lip at the mere thought of drinking it.

However, powdered milk has more uses than just drinking, which makes it essential as an addition to your food storage.  In this article I plan to share the different types of milk that can be purchased, their nutritional benefits, shelf life, and ways to make them more drinkable if you just can't stand the taste.

Quick Tip #9
From FEMA
Before a Biological Threat

Unlike an explosion, a biological attack may or may not be immediately obvious. While it is possible that you will see signs of a biological attack, as was sometimes the case with the anthrax mailings, it is perhaps more likely that local health care workers will report a pattern of unusual illness or there will be a wave of sick people seeking emergency medical attention. You will probably learn of the danger through an emergency radio or TV broadcast, or some other signal used in your community. You might get a telephone call or emergency response workers may come to your door.

The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property from the effects of a biological threat:

  • Build an Emergency Supply Kit, which includes items like non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries.
  • Make a Family Emergency Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.
    • Plan places where your family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate neighborhood.
    • It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than to call across town, so an out-of-town contact may be in a better position to communicate among separated family members.
    • You may also want to inquire about emergency plans at places where your family spends time: work, daycare and school. If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one.
    • Knowing your community's warning systems and disaster plans.
    • Notify caregivers and babysitters about your plan.
    • Make plans for your pets
  • Check with your doctor to ensure all required or suggested immunizations are up to date. Children and older adults are particularly vulnerable to biological agents.
  • Consider installing a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter in your furnace return duct. These filters remove particles in the 0.3 to 10 micron range and will filter out most biological agents that may enter your house. If you do not have a central heating or cooling system, a stand-alone portable HEPA filter can be used.

Catastrophe Readiness

We started our website after experiencing the Hurricane named Irene; as everyone knows trees falling into ones house and having no electricity for over a week isn't a fun experience! I never thought that a Hurricane could do so much damage as we lived over a hundred miles inland! Everything in the fridge went bad of course and trying to find a place to stay during times of Disaster's is very difficult to do as all of the hotels were full and we had animals that needed daily attention, thus most hotels don't take too kindly for allowing animals. So we stuck it out in the house. Not to mention the Earthquake that happened too, I mean who would have thought that an earthquake would happen in little old Goochland Virginia! To feel the Earth rumble underneath your feet and see things shaking and falling off the walls of your house is a mighty scary thing! After all this we knew that we needed to be prepared for whatever may happen next, so that's when we started the website. These experiences taught us a lot mainly that we weren't prepared and many others weren't prepared either!

The website features: information in many ways on how to prepare for different types of Catastrophe's. Whether it's a tornado, hurricane, earthquake or a flood, our website provides valuable insight on what to do to get prepared.First we have the survival tips, which give the viewer the basics concerning water, food, first aid and a backup plans if the power goes out! Secondly we offer up to date news headlines that link people directly to what's happening currently in our world! Thirdly we offer free videos by experts, which tell people key points on what you need to know on how to survive in many different types of disasters. This information guides you have to things right the first time in an emergency, because you may not get a second chance! The videos also offer information on how to increase your chances of survival such as if you were staying at a hotel or high rise building: you may want to choose a floor lower than the sixth because many fire ladders cannot reach beyond that point! Also knowing a point of exit in case of an emergency helps increase your odds of survival. Another video talks about having a basic tool kit for how to get shelter, fire, water and food should you have to go into the wilderness.

Lastly our website features quality vendors such as: My-food-Storage, E-Foods Direct, Nitro-Pak, Smokey Mountain Knife Works and Amazon. With this many suppliers we can accommodate all and any type of survival preparedness! So whether you're a Rookie or an Experienced Prepper you should check out our website: www.catastrophereadiness.com

P.S. we are now located in North Carolina, luv it here on the coast!

Thanks, R. Heller & V. Ross /  Catastrophe Readiness!
