The #1 Reason to Wear Bling in Texas
By Marjory Wildcraft
I am on a mission to live sustainably. My primary water source is a rain water collection system. Collecting rainwater is a great idea almost everywhere, but especially here is the drought-prone Southwest.
 | Our rainwater system during construction. Later we buried the piping to protect from freeze damage. |
We collect the water into big tanks from the roof of a barn, which is on top of a hill. That is super convenient as we can then pipe the water almost everywhere using gravity. No pumps needed - just manual valves to turn the water on or off.
Look Ma - no electricity!
My husband built the system. He is a mechanical genius. But there is one small problem, His wife (me) is totally scatterbrained and prone to forgetting that the water is on when the phone rings, or the dogs corner another snake, or the kids are suddenly famished, or a neighbor comes up with some chickens to trade... You get the idea.
Meanwhile the water is running and running and then the tanks are dry. When this is your main water source it causes friction in the marriage.

Watering and looking fabulous!

with the most awesome solution. We dispersed her enormous bling collection onto every faucet on the farm. Whenever anyone turns on the water, you also get to wear the bling until you turn off the water.
Not only do you look fabulous, but everyone else knows and reminds you that you have water on.
And that my friends, is the #1 reason to wear bling in Texas.

Lice Infestation
by Joe Alton, M.D. aka Dr. Bones of Doom and Bloom
I've said on many occasions that good sanitation and hygiene will do more to keep you healthy than anything that I can do as a medical doctor. As survival medic, you will have some control over the likelihood that your family or group will be exposed to unsanitary conditions. Indeed, your diligence in this matter is one of the major factors that will determine your success as a caregiver.
A common health problem pertaining to poor hygiene is the presence of lice, also known as "Pediculosis". Lice (singular: louse) are wingless insects that are found on many species. On humans, there are three types: Head, Body and Pubic. Some diseases use lice as vectors, causing major implications for entire survival groups. Sometimes, itching caused by lice causes breaks in the skin which allows other infections to develop. Read more here....

Storing Oats and Their Differences
By Jalapeno Gal77Many people store oats in their food storage, including myself. When I first started prepping, I had no idea what the difference between steel-cut oats, rolled oats and quick oats were. After doing a bit of research I now know.
- Steel cut oats, also called Scotch or Irish oats, are oats that have been cut. They take the longest to cook and have a chewy consistency.
- Rolled oats or Old Fashioned Oats are oats that have been steamed first and then rolled out flat. They take longer to cook than quick oats, but not as long as steel-cut oats.
- Quick oats, or instant oats, are what most of us are familiar with today. These are pre-cut, dried and then rolled. These cook in a few minutes and have a mushy consistency.
- Oat Groats are whole, minimally processed oats. They require hours of soaking and cooking before they are edible. They are also referred to as "cleaned oats" in reference to the fact they have been hulled and then left alone.

Quick Tip #5
Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, and confusion. If you suspect CO poisoning, get outside to fresh air immediately, and then call 911.
Install battery-operated CO alarms or CO alarms with battery backup in your home outside separate sleeping areas.

How to Survive Societal Collapse in Suburbia
Ron Douglas and Family interviewed by New York Times. A great read and postive article about Preppers. On a clear morning in May, Ron Douglas left his home in exurban Denver, eased into his Toyota pickup truck and drove to a business meeting at a Starbucks. Douglas, a bearded bear of a man, ordered a venti double-chocolate-chip Frappuccino - "the girliest drink ever," he called it - and then sat down to discuss the future of the growing survivalist industry. Sharing Preparedness with the World.
The APN receives several casting calls and media interview requests each week.
For many of these requests we are able to find someone willing to participate, but often times it does get difficult to find people in certain areas. For this reason we have set up a section on the forum for you to browse the requests and respond to any of them that might interest you. If you wish to participate with any documentaries or media interviews you can follow the link here (note, you must be logged into the APN forum to access that link)OPSEC is importantThe APN certainly does not want anyone to provide any more information than what they personally feel comfortable providing. However, everyone's personal situations are different. Some people live in very safe and secure neighborhoods and feel comfortable talking with the media, while others do not. Evaluate your own personal situation and choose the type of media interview you are comfortable with, whether it be radio, newspaper or TV. Avoid discussions of Cash, Guns, and Gold. Also, avoid political, extremist or militia type discussions. Don't give fodder for the fire. Instead, stick to good sound prepping ideas and disaster preparedness tips. Interview the Interviewer. Make sure you know who you are talking to and who they work for. Some requests ask preppers to show what kind of gear and supplies that they store. If you are uncomfortable providing that kind of information, then do not proceed with the interview. Some requests ask that you provide your real name, others do not. Remember, only choose the requests that you are comfortable with. We provide additional tips when talking with the media on this page (Note, you must be logged into the APN forum to access that link)
