Is a Low Cost Weather Station in your Plans?
by Robert Hawkins / KI4HEE
Ooooooooo...
A pro weather station is a "Gee, I wish I could afford one of those..." kind of gadget any guy or gal, with an eye on the sky, would love to have, but who likely can't swallow the mega-dollar price tag most of the complete "bells & whistles" models carry. (At least that's been the case for me...I've always wanted one, but could never justify the expense.)
Beyond the common desk-top home weather kits out there, the next step up... a weather station capable of recording accurate meteorological readings, with wireless measuring instruments, and able to upload its data via the Internet, you had little choice but to invest heavily in expensive scientific instruments & equipment. However, there is a line Weather Stations offering full-blown pro weather station features... wireless connectivity, data logging, AND Internet connectivity... champaign features with a beer-bottle price, the line of weather stations badged by Ambient, Weatherwise, & others, made by Chinese Manufacturer, Fine Offset Ltd. who's kits have been available now for about 3 years, and which have recently come down from the $150-$200 range, to crack the sub-$100 sales offerings...a budget-minded WX Geek price range. (and just in time for the Holidays too!)

Ok, let's stop a moment...WHY monitor the weather? What has this to do with Prepping?

Alternate Weatherstation
You might think that this is a bit of frivolous gadgetry.  No back-to-the-basics Prepper worth his dutch oven & rocket stove would have need for a weather station gizmo recording weather data unless...
1. You want a early warning device for severe weather in your area.
2. You want to know when it's best to plant crops, or other handy farming info like... How much rain you've had, what tomorrows' weather may be like, how many days has it been without ANY rain, or how likely will it get below freezing tonight?
Sure, anyone can read an Old Farmers Almanac for old sage planting advice, or measure the black fur on a "Wooly Booger" caterpillar to see how cold this winter is going to be, or wet a finger and stick it in the air,.. but with your own weather station, you can take detailed weather readings and compile the results. Which then enables you to spot trends, determine patterns, to even (dare we say) FORECAST the weather. And you know how valuable a accurate weather prediction is, especially if your preparations depend on fair weather, instead of foul. Right?
.
OK, I admit... it's also a REAL Uber-geek Gadget too!

Bob's New Toy...

So, for only $99 & shipping, a Weatherwise WS-2080 arrived on my doorstep. The components: Wind Gauge, Wind Direction Vane, Barometer (indoor & outdoor), Temperature Gauge (indoor & outdoor), Rain Gauge, Data Transmitter & Atomic Clock RX, mount poles & hardware, and the Indoor receiver & display with PC Software arrived nested in "egg crate" packaging with assembly & operation instructions. Assembly took less than an hour, and the applications that enable live data streaming on the Internet to FTP, website or webpage presentation was intuitive & painless.

TS-2080 wirelessly monitors with Atomic Clock Precision
As for the quality of the weather stations materials... the tabletop or wall mount data receiver does have the fit & finish of a typical Hong Kong electronic gadget, but it does deliver it's job with little muss & fuss. Besides, the real use will be importing the sensor data into your PC, which the station does painlessly with the supplied USB cable and supplied software & drivers. The outside weather sensors are plastic too, however, all are made from studier, UV resistant ABS plastic, which from reports, can handle a few years of weather extremes.
The bottom line: this weather station, while billed as a "Professional Weather Station" is in reality, more of a entry level device, that can & does get the job done professionally too.

Sending Data to the Great Beyond...

The big relief is the ease in importing the data into your computer and onto whatever Internet application suits your needs. Set up is minimal, and while you may appear to be a real Melvin in your ability to get your weather station streaming live on the Internet, it's all easy-peasy, fill this out, & click here. I registered my weather station with weatherunderground's PWS service in 5 minutes, and was sending weather data to the website within 10.The included Easyweather software is a bare bones app that will get your station displaying data on your desktop, but you will need a freeware program called Cumulus to export your data to the web. After you fill out the settings for the software to know what it is sending and to where, it does all the magic.

If you've been holding off outfitting your home with it's own weather monitoring capability, now might be the time to pull the trigger on one of these low-cost units.

Winter Safety Tips

Winter Driving
By Tom Martin

Winter is not the time to mess around on the roads.  I have seen hundreds of accidents in my lifetime that could have easily been prevented by simply slowing down or waiting out the storm.  But if you must drive, then do it as safely as possible.  So with that in mind I am offering some important winter driving tips.
  • Watch for Black Ice.  It's a killer and can sneak up on you before you know it.  Black ice typically forms when the road surface has been wet and temperatures just start to reach freezing.  The ice tends to be a little wet on the surface which makes it super slick.  You should never drive on black ice, period.  If the temperature is close to freezing, the road surface looks wet, but you see no mist coming from passing cars, then you are driving on black ice.
  • Bridges freeze before the rest of the road surface.  This is true roadsign of overpasses and underpasses.  Whenever you approach a bridge you should let off the accelerator and coast through to the other side. If you are crossing a long bridge then ease off the accelerator a little and use extra caution. Having your foot on the accelerator could cause you spin out when your drive tires make contact with the ice.
  • Look for ice forming on the corners of your windshield and the backs of your mirrors.  This is where ice will typically start to form on your vehicle.  This can help give you an indication of what the road surface is like.
  • Install a thermometer to gauge outside temperature if your vehicle is not already equipped with one.
  • Reduce speed.  How much you reduce your speed depends on speedo your vehicle size, type, design, the kind of tires you have, and road conditions.  Do not overdrive your ability to stop within a safe distance.  Most accidents happen due to excessive speed for the conditions.
  • Increase Following Distance.  Do not follow close to other traffic
  • Keep both hands on the wheel and eliminate any distractions; radio, cell phones, etc...
  • Watch and pay attention to road signs.
  • Carry chains or traction tires or devices.  Use them when recommended by your states DOT or if the weather conditions warrant use.
  • If you don't have to drive, then DON'T.  Stay home to live another day.

Be Safe and keep the sunny side up.  Don't end up like this guy!

Canning Mom's Meatloaf Balls
By
Canning meatloaf balls can be a pleasure to add to food storage.  In the long run, it can save you money when the price of meat sky rockets and its easy to grab a jar if you're hungry or want to make meatloaf balls for dinner.

There are a few different ways to make meatloaf balls out there.  The way I do it is a little different from your basic recipe, but tastes delicious.  Keep in mind, if you prefer the traditional way, then please do that way.

Sharing Preparedness with the World.
The APN receives several casting calls and media interview requests each week.
For many of these requests we are able to find someone willing to participate, but often times it does get difficult to find people in certain areas.  For this reason we have set up a section on the forum for you to browse the requests and respond to any of them that might interest you.  If you wish to participate with any documentaries or media interviews you can follow the link here (note, you must be logged into the APN forum to access that link)

OPSEC is important
The APN certainly does not want anyone to provide any more information hush than what they personally feel comfortable providing. However, everyone's personal situations are different.  Some people live in very safe and secure neighborhoods and feel comfortable talking with the media, while others do not.  Evaluate your own personal situation and choose the type of media interview you are comfortable with, whether it be radio, newspaper or TV.  Avoid discussions of Cash, Guns, and Gold.  Also, avoid political, extremist or militia type discussions.  Don't give fodder for the fire.  Instead, stick to good sound prepping ideas and disaster preparedness tips.

Interview the Interviewer.  Make sure you know who you are talking to bat child and who they work for.  Some requests ask preppers to show what kind of gear and supplies that they store.  If you are uncomfortable providing that kind of information, then do not proceed with the interview.  Some requests ask that you provide your real name, others do not.  Remember, only choose the requests that you are comfortable with.  We provide additional tips when talking with the media on this page

Quick Tip #3
Fire is fast!  In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into an out of control fire. In minutes a home can be completely filled with thick black smoke.  Do NOT take time to look for pets or valuables.  Use what little time you have to escape and get out.

How much land does it take?
by Marjory Wildcraft

When thinking of becoming self-reliant, the question arises "how much land do I need to be able to sustainably grow enough food for my family?" The exact answer to that question depends on several factors, but you can learn a lot, and make a pretty good estimate, by looking at the extremes of land use.

Lets start first off with the almost magical dream of the pure hunter/gatherer. The shit hits the fan and you take your rifle and a few supplies and head out to the wilderness to live off the land. Just how much land does it take to support you without destroying all the wildlife and plant populations? How much area do you need in order live sustainably as a hunter/gatherer?

Since there are so few actual hunter/gathers left alive on the planet we will turn to anthropological data. The quick and easy answer is that traditional peoples used on average, about 10 square miles per person. 10 square miles is 6,400 acres - that is for one person. There are numerous studies and authors that cite this number and one of the most accessible is Jared Diamond author of the popular title Collapse: How Societies Choose To Fail or Succeed. Another excellent source is Tending The Wild: Native American Knowledge and the Management of California's Natural Resources.  California's lushest landscape was able to support up to 1.5 people per square mile on the rich coast of the Santa Barbara channel, and 1 person per 12.5 sq. miles in the desert regions.

OK, so you won't be going that primitive. What about you growing your own food in gardens, food plots, orchards, livestock, and perhaps a bit of hunting? Small scale agriculture is definitely the way to go for most people. So how much land are you going to need for that?

The research to the answer to that question was started back in the 70's by a man named John Jeavons. The "Bio-Intensive" method Jeavons developed has been implemented worldwide to alleviate hunger and malnutrition. Jeavons has a model for a vegetarian diet and the short answer is summarized as approximately 8,000 sq.ft. for a complete diet for one person (you need 4,000 sq/ft. of actual growing space and at least 4,000 sq.ft. for pathways and access). That is also assuming you have four growing seasons per year, and your harvest is 100% (no failures). For reference, an acre is 43,560 sq.ft. So in a more southern climate, you could theoretically support about 5 people per acre. But life is never that perfect. My personal experience is that 2 acres in a mild temperate region will completely wear you out and is enough room to comfortably support a family of four with a variety of food sources such as gardens, orchards, small livestock, and wild crafting. You can still do a lot in less area, and of course, everyone always wants more.

Marjory's CDs
"Grow your own Groceries" DVD's
The absolute best reference for the Bio-Intensive method is the book How To Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible On Less Land Than You Can Imagined. This book is the bible of sustainably growing food and is on the bookshelf of all of the hundreds of organic farmers I have interviewed.

But don't forget, even if you live in an apartment, there is a lot you can do.  The most important thing is to get started.
