Plastic & Water Parabolic Solar Lens Cooker
|
What a Bright Idea! By Tom Martin
Last month I had the opportunity of a lifetime to visit my fiancee in the Philippines. But just as with any place that I travel, I cant help but to talk prepping. So I drew out plans to show her family a design for a very simple solar cooker that I had seen on Youtube. They were amazed at the simplicity of the design and how it could be used to cook with and even to start a fire. So, on the second day of my trip, we began construction...
Frame Construction... A simple design really. Start with a basic wood frame, about 4ft x 4ft x 8ft tall. Clear plastic is then stretched tight across the top of the frame. We used a shower curtain for this design
(...that's my fiancee Dayday, her uncle Romie and the local carpenter, constructing and assembling the frame.)
Adding Water... The basic principal here is using the water to form a parabolic lens (magnifying glass). The parabolic lens can then magnify sunlight to create heat. As the plastic stretches under the weight of the water, the water will naturally pool in the shape of a lens. The more water you add, the larger and thicker the lens will grow which also alters the location of the focal point. Just be careful to have the plastic securely fastened, and don't add too much water. The weight could tear the plastic and drench whatever you have underneath with water.
Cooking with the Sun...On a sunny day, between the hours of 9AM and 3PM, with noon being the optimal time, the parabola will create enough heat to cook or start a fire with. Unfortunately, because the frame requires level ground so that the water can settle perfectly in the center, it is impossible to aim it directly at the sun to gain maximum efficiency. However, it does work and it can be used for alternative cooking. In Conclusion...While the parabolic lens solar cooker did turn out to be a great science project and draw a large crowd of curious onlookers, I deemed it to not be very practical for cooking. The frame is just too big to move around and store, and with the inability to aim it directly at the sun, it just isn't very efficient. The upside is the design is very simple, easy to build within a couple of hours, and very cheap to acquire the materials. But personally, I think I'll go with a more practical design like a Sun Oven.

APN Origins - The Texas Preppers Network
By Tom Martin
Be Aware. Be Informed. Be Prepared. That is the motto of the Texas Preppers Network founded in 2008 by Riverwalker of Texas. The very first Preppers Network to come into existence, the TXPN was created by RW for the purpose of networking members together before, during, and after the event of a disaster. With a huge state full of self-reliant, independent, and patriotic people such as Texas with its droughts, range fires, Hurricanes, and the famous Texas twisters, it's no surprise that the whole concept of "Preppers Networks" would get it's start in the Lone Star State. Utah Preppers With approximately 50% of the state of Utah devout Mormons, and with preparedness and food storage being a strong focal point of the LDS church, one would expect Utah to be full of preppers. So naturally Utah Preppers, founded by Jason Hall and Phil Burns, would fall next in long line of preppers networks to come. Kentucky Preppers NetworkFounded by Chris Johnson, the KPN made it's mark in the Bluegrass state shortly after the founding of TXPN and Utah Preppers, forever guaranteeing that the Prepper movement was here to stay. Idaho Preppers Idaho with its vast wilderness, mountain ranges, rugged terrain and brutal winters certainly has no shortage of survivalists and preppers. Incidentally, Idaho Preppers was founded by a Prepper known as Marie in late 2008. Idaho happens to be my current home state ( I was formerly also a resident of Texas). With my pride in both Texas and Idaho, and my preparedness instincts, it's no wonder that I had and active interest in both the Texas Preppers Network and Idaho group. After getting together with the founders of each of these organizations, I proposed the idea of a National organization to promote and foster the development of State Preppers Networks all across America. With their support, the idea of the APN was born. Had that first network founded by Riverwalker in Texas not been formed, the preppers movement would not be what it is today.

Fried Rice And Other Recipes For Survival
By Jalapeno Gal77
I often think of the ways I can use my food storage to make different meals. After years of research it seems that white rice is among many suggested items to keep in your survival stash because it has a shelf life of about 30 years if packaged correctly. (#10 can or Mylar bag in a bucket with oxygen absorbers.) Brown Rice has a shelf life of usually 2 - 3 years. It only takes some water to boil up white rice and eat it, but I personally don't like bland food so I started finding different ways to cook it.
At the grocery store you can buy and store the boxes of flavored rice such as Rice-A-Roni, but what you pay for that you can get a large bag of white rice and make many delicious meals out of it with just a little imagination.
Here are some of my favorite ways to cook and eat white rice. Since my articles are focused primarily around survival and self-sufficiency, I will be referring mostly to storage items, but all of these ideas can be used with every day ingredients too. Read More...
