What is Women's Equality Day?

"At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), in 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as "Women's Equality Day."

The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. This was the culmination of a massive, peaceful civil rights movement by women that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world's first women's rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.

The observance of Women's Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality."

Greetings!

Summer is here and local municipal elections are starting with town committees endorsing candidates. We need more Democratic women to run for office. Please consider running for your local council and commissions. Don't wait to be asked, step right up - we are just as good and more often better than the men running for office!

May and June proved to be very inspirational with our State Convention and the National Federation of Democratic Women's Convention. See the pictures below to get a flavor of what Democratic women are doing.

Our next big event will be our celebration of
Women's Equality Day. Hope to see you there ~

CFDW's Celebration of
Women's Equality Day

Host Mayor Daniel Drew, Middletown

Sunday August 25th
at 3 pm
 in Middletown

Come celebrate the 93rd year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. See the 20 minute video about the Women's Suffrage Movement and hear from our elected officials.  This is open to the public and we welcome you bringing young people to learn about our history. It is so important to never forget the fight our grandmothers and great grandmothers fought for us to vote today.
Save the date and watch for more information about the event and the location.

CFDW Convention May 4th
Our biennial convention was held at the Capitol in the Old Judiciary Room. We heard from 5th CD Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, LT Governor Nancy Wyman, Attorney General George Jepson, and Comptroller Kevin Lembo. We also heard from Kelly Luxemberg, recent graduate of the Yale Women's Campaign School. Our luncheon speaker was Susan Campbell, retired reporter and author. It was a full day of information about Washington DC, the Affordable Health Care Act in Connecticut, and women's issues and politics. Our day ended with the installation of our new officers of the CFDW who will serve for the next two years.

NFDW Convention
CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA
JUNE 13-16, 2013

Four of us from Connecticut attended the National Convention in West Virginia. The speakers and programs were excellent with talk of how important women and young people were in the 2012 election and great ideas on how to keep the momentum going. The West Virginians were wonderful hosts in a beautiful state.

We are very proud of Joanne LeBeau of East Hartford, immediate Past President of CFDW, who was elected to 4th Vice President of the NFDW. Having Connecticut represented again on the NFDW executive board will be great for us and for the NFDW.
