Message from the Secretary
Colorado's 2013 legislative session ends next week. Our legislators have worked hard and accomplished a lot; most notably, Colorado passed common-sense gun control legislation; ASSET, which provides residents with greater access to higher education; and civil unions, which became law yesterday. Sen. Kefalas, Rep. Fischer and Rep. Ginal are hosting a town hall this Saturday that will focus on the end of the session. Details below. In the last remaining days of the session, there is still a lot of work for our legislators. The Colorado Senate worked past midnight on Monday because the GOP filibustered HB1303, the Voter Access and Modernized Elections Act, an elections bill that will make it easier for people to exercise their constitutional right to vote and save taxpayer dollars. HB1303 will allow same-day voter registration, and if passed, all voters will receive a mail-in ballot. Voters will still have an opportunity to vote in person at a vote center. This bill has bi-partisan support from county clerks across the state, but the Republican legislators argued for hours against it, claiming it would increase voter fraud. Sen. Lundberg went so far as to call this bill "The Same-Day Voter Fraud Bill." Many states have same-day voter registration, and there is no evidence that those states experienced any increase in voter fraud, but apparently facts do not matter to the GOP. --Anne Wilseck
"Voting is the most precious right of every citizen, and we have a moral obligation to ensure the integrity of our voting process."
