Complete State of Mentoring Survey for a Chance to Win $500 for Your Program

In collaboration with MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, VMP is launching the 2016 National Mentoring Program SurveyThis is a chance for VMP to capture a snapshot of mentoring activity in Virginia. Why is this important? The data collected through these efforts will help MENTOR and VMP:
  • Design more effective trainings to meet your organization's needs
  • Target new investments that can fill gaps in services in high need communities or for specific groups of children
  • Provide more detail about community needs and gaps for recruitment campaigns, advocacy, and funding efforts for the field
In appreciation of your part in this data collection effort, we're sweetening the deal with an incentive: your program will be entered in a drawing to win a cash prize (winner is $500, second place is $250) that can use towards program supplies or activities for the youth you serve. Please allow approximately 30 minutes for completion - The survey also has a save feature that will allow you to return to the page later.

The regional, state-wide, and national reports resulting from these efforts will be sent to programs to help inform their programming, recruitment, communications, advocacy, and fundraising requests. Click here to complete the survey.

The Importance of Closure

For many mentoring programs, this is the time of year during which mentor-mentee matches come to a close.  VMP would like to provide a couple tips and reminders as you prepare to either take a break during the summer months or end the mentoring relationship:

  • Talk to your program coordinator. Most programs have a closure procedure in place. If you are unsure about how to talk to your mentee about the end of the relationship, use your program coordinator as a resource.
  • Check in with your mentee. How are they feeling about the match closing? Reflect on your time together and share your favorite memories.
  • Promise only what you can commit to. If you can continue the mentoring relationship the next school year, let your mentee know and check-in with them to ensure this is what they would like as well. If you are unsure about making this commitment, share with your mentee that you not be able to continue, and why (potential changes in schedule, an upcoming move, etc).
  • What to do about future contact? Follow all program polices as they relate to continuing contact with your mentee after the mentoring program has ended. Obtaining parental permission for ongoing contact is important.
If you are a program coordinator and want to learn more about programmatic procedures to help matches close on a positive note, check out the Elements of Effective PracticeNeed help developing closure procedures for your program? Contact us to learn more about how VMP can provide resources and guidance through the technical assistance process.
