Take Action: Urge Your Senators and Representatives to Better Protect Youth

The Child Protection Improvements Act (CPIA) would ensure nonprofit youth-serving organizations have access to national FBI fingerprint checks in order to make informed decisions about potential volunteers, staff and mentors. Contact your senators and representatives to show your support of protective measures for youth.

How can adults encourage children to adopt a "growth mindset," to focus on learning and improvement? Check out this article on the growth mindset from Carol Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford University.  
 
Prepare for National Mentoring Month in January

Is your program prepared for National Mentoring Month? Looking for resources and strategies to share? Check out ways you can get involved to spread key messages about the benefits of mentoring in your community!
 
MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership has assembled a toolkit with prepared messaging and templates for programs to use or customize to their needs. You may also download print and digital campaign materials here, including social media images, web badges, digital thank you cards, and more.  Throughout the month, share your mentoring stories on social media with the hashtags #mentoringworks or #mentorIRL and tag VMP.

  • Thursday, January 14: "I Am a Mentor" Social Media Day
  • Monday, January 18: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
  • Thursday, January 21: Thank Your Mentor Day
  • January 27-29: National Mentoring Summit in Washington, D.C.

Nominations Open for Annual Mentoring Awards
 
Nominations are now being accepted for VMP's annual Virginia Mentoring Awards. Click here to recognize the work of an outstanding volunteer mentor or mentoring program. 

We also hope you will join us in celebrating the award winners at VMP's 14th Annual Virginia Mentoring Awards Luncheon & Conference, to be held Thursday, March 17th at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. Stay tuned for registration details! 


Mentor Meet-Up
VMP would like to thank you for being part of the mentoring movement! On January 21st, VMP will hold a Mentor Meet-up, a free informal social for mentors. VMP is looking forward to bringing mentors together to share their mentoring experiences.  Beer, wine and light refreshments will be provided.  This is a free event, registration is required. Looking forward to seeing you on Jan 21st
