Save the date for the Annual Virginia Mentoring Awards

The theme for 2014 is
"Learning from Quality Mentoring."
Join hundreds of other mentors and mentoring advocates as we celebrate outstanding mentors and mentoring programs. Keynote speaker David Shapiro, President and CEO of the National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR) and emcee Ros Taylor, Principal of Woodville Elementary School, will highlight the event. Call for Proposals for the 2014 Virginia Mentoring Conference
 
The 2014 Virginia Mentoring Conference, to be held on March 20, 2014, will feature workshops on mentoring and academics, mentoring in learning environments and/or quality mentoring practices. Interested in presenting a workshop? Submit a proposal today! Deadline for submissions is January 17. Look for registration for the conference later this month.
 
National Mentoring Summit

Join with hundreds of mentors and mentoring advocates across the country in celebrating and learning at the annual National Mentoring Summit. Attend sessions to expand your knowledge, network with other like-minded mentors and program coordinators, and visit with legislators and stakeholders. Learn more and register here

MLK Day Movie Screening 
Monday, January 20
VMP will be partnering with HandsOn Greater Richmond, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, and the Science Museum to screen Troop 491: The Adventures of the Muddy Lions. Troop 491 explores the themes of choices, chances, consequences, peer pressure, and the importance of role models through the story of a young boy coping with life in the inner city. There will be an audience-driven facilitated discussion with the filmmaker, Patrick Praheme Ricks, immediately following the movie.

VMP is accepting applications for the next two cohorts of QBM, a quality improvement process for mentoring programs. Interested in learning more?  Watch a recent webinar on QBM to learn more. Mentoring 101: New Mentor Training
January 21, 2014, 6-8pm. New mentor trainings are held at VMP's office, located on the third floor of the Science Museum of Virginia (2500 W. Broad St, Richmond, VA). Register here.
The Science of Mentoring! Incorporating STEM Into Mentoring Activities
January 22, 1:00 pm OR 5:00 pm (select one) at the Science Museum of Virginia, Discovery Room. For mentors with mentees in 3rd - 5th grade, this program is designed to promote student engagement by conducting fun and engaging experiments at home with friends, mentors and family. Mentors will receive training and a backpack full of activities for their mentees. This training is presented in cooperation with the Science Museum of Virginia. Register here.
Building a Quality Mentoring Program
Two-day workshop, February 12 & 19, 2014, 9:30am - 3:30pm at the Science Museum of Virginia (2500 W. Broad St, Richmond, VA). Learn more and register here.
Programs Needed for Study
Drs. Janis Kupersmidt and Jean Rhodes of Innovation Research and Training are seeking mentoring programs to participate in a new research project: evaluating a web-based training program for pre-match mentors. The training program consists of three courses that focus on the skills and knowledge that new mentors need in order to develop effective relationships with their mentees. Click here to learn more.
