KOP-BID Receives $500,000 DVRPC Grant for Shuttle

Commuter Shuttle to Connect KOP Business Park to Regional Rail in 2013

KOP-BID was awarded a $500,000 three-year CMAQ Grant by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC).

A map showing the approximate boundaries of the King of Prussia District and the Regional Rail stations the commuter transit shuttle will service.

The grant will provide partial funding for a commuter transit shuttle service connecting the King of Prussia Business Park to Regional Rail at the Norristown Transportation Center and Wayne Station. KOP-BID partnered with Upper Merion Township on the application.

KOP-BID will partner with King of Prussia commercial property owners to complete funding for the shuttle. In addition, tickets will likely be sold, although the fare structure is still being determined.

The commuter transit shuttle is slated to start operations in spring 2013. The shuttle will be in service Monday-Friday during the morning and evening commute, providing an alternate option for King of Prussia's more than 57,000 employees who commute by vehicle each day.

KOP-BID will hire a private vendor to run the shuttle system. The shuttles will be branded vehicles with Wi-Fi access and bike racks.

KOP-BID Installing Gateway Signs at King of Prussia's Major Points of Entry

On November 12, 2012, KOP-BID began to install gateway signs at King of Prussia's major points of entry. Standing 22 feet tall and 4 1/2 feet wide, the two-sided, energy efficient, LED illuminated signs provide a sense of arrival into the King of Prussia community for residents, employees and visitors.

KOP-BID worked closely with Upper Merion Township, PennDOT District 6-0 and PECO to design and install the gateway signs in some of King of Prussia's most challenging locations.

The signs will be installed in two phases and the locations include:

  • Phase One: to be completed before Thanksgiving 2012
    • DeKalb Pike (Rt. 202) and S. Gulph Road
    • DeKalb Pike (Rt. 202) near Saulin Boulevard (will be solar powered)
    • First Avenue and N. Gulph Road
    • S. Henderson Road and S. Gulph Road
  • Phase Two: to begin spring 2013
    • Village Drive/Swedesford Road and 422 Interchange
    • Mall Boulevard and Conrad Road

From the Executive Director

Creating better connections to public transportation in King of Prussia is a high priority for the King of Prussia District. Despite being the largest center of employment in the Philadelphia suburban region, King of Prussia has surprisingly few options for those who wish to commute via public transit to work.

Read my latest blog post to learn about our plan for a commuter transit shuttle and how it will positively effect employees of the Business Park.
