Keep Germs at Bay
More Time for Play

Fall always comes with a great deal of excitement for kids, including new classes, friends and activities. However, with the beginning of the school year also comes the increased prevalence of illnesses. There are a number of ways you can make sure your family stays healthy this year.
"Make sure children wash their hands after returning from school, which will help prevent the spread of school germs at home," Dr. Allegro-Skinner, Family Practitioner at Catskill Regional Medical Group recommends. "Also, regularly disinfect all surfaces children come into contact with throughout the day, such as toys, furniture and electronic devices. This helps to ensure the entire family can stay healthy."
It's also a good idea to remind children to cover their mouths with their elbow when sneezing, and to avoid making close contact with others when they are sick. Ensure your kids are up to date on all vaccinations for illnesses like measles, mumps and pertussis, as well as the flu.

"To make sure kids have a healthy immune system that helps fight off disease, make sure you start from the inside out," said Dr. Allegro-Skinner. "Children should get a full eight hours of sleep each night and have a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables for the vitamins and nutrients they need."
