It's Showtime!

In Hamburg, Germany, it has been 9 days of "hanseboot", the local maritime boatshow and the German 5.5m Class Association has presented 5.5 GER 55 "Oro Nero", to interested sailors. Seeing this racing machine directly has impressed many who did not yet have had a chance to see a 5.5m Modern boat from nearby.

Oro Nero
"Oro Nero" - staircase to attraction
With so far only a few Modern 5.5m boats in Germany, it had been the intention of the German 5.5m Class Association to promote this segment of 5.5m racing, for the next season.

At the boatshow, it was also time to award the annual perpetual prizes, counting in low point manner the results from selected regattas in Germany. The best Modern boat has been 5.5 GER 79, the best Evolution boat 5.5 GER 82 and the best Vintage Classic boat 5.5 GER 66.

Tommy Müller (GER 82 "Sinewave 5.5") looked somehow puzzled, when receiving the "Evolution Preis", this exceptional piece of art; or was it, that he started considering a cold laminated mahogany Modern boat for future races? It seems, support for it would be there.

Having shown constant good results with his immaculately restored Bjarne Aas 5.5m Classic, Thies Först was all smiles, when joining Tommy, presenting the trophies. Tommy had also received the 5-Nations-Cup in the Evolution category.

Another perpetual Cup handed over was the one for the Modern section in the 5-Nations-Cup, going to 5.5 GER 55. Maybe it was the recent publications on worldwide scanning & filing of internet data, which made the winner step aside and just showing a hand, partly.

Those thinking these cups are small - you are right, they are. With good reason, as they are meant to stay aboard of the winning boats, to be used with that good bottle of Port, after the finish line. During one season only, though; then the new annual results will tell about the upcoming onboard usages.

So, go on with plans for your future racing calendar. Follow the entries on the International 5.5m Class website - Calendar section - and reserve those dates which fit your own schedules best. And - tell your sailing friends about it!

Yours,

Fleet News

Canada

In another demonstration of speed & grace, "Nantoria" and her skipper John Lister have shown their fellow club members the route to go, winning the autumn club regatta also in this year. Being a race with a handicap system, John fears to be getting a harder handicap to sail with for next year, while enjoying honours and prizes won.

John is currently looking at another restoration project, to further grow the local 5.5m fleet.

France

The French 5.5m Class Association has announced the date for next years' edition of the "Christian Hauvette Trophy", to be sailed for in Benodet, 16th -17th August.

Germany

In Kiel, the president of Kiel Yacht Club is initiating regular meetings of 5.5m owners at his club. Also, he intends to group the boats in Schilksee harbour. One outstanding boat of the many Classics there is 5.5 GER 66 "Meltemi". Not only has the boat again won the annual Vintage Classic trophy and the local Tom Kyle Preis, but it is also festivating its 50th anniversary.

Designed and built in 1963, this beauty and her crew are looking forward to race one day against the sisterboats 5.5 USA 52 "Little Sister" and 5.5 NOR 28 "Norna X".

In Berlin, preparations are underway to present 5.5 GER 11 "Charybdis" during the local "Boot & Fun" boatshow, 21st to 24th of November. The owner of the boat had put it generously into the hands of the German 5.5m Class president, to promote 5.5m racing and the boat has since been seen in regattas in Berlin, Flensburg, Kiel and Benodet.

Sweden

When visited in March, Mats Nelson was still uncertain on racing plans, had even considered to sell his boat; but with the outlook towards the 2015 World Championship in Nynäshamn and good buddies to meet again, he will now bring 5.5 SWE 46 "Cirrus II" back to regattas.

Mats has been contributing to saving historic 5.5m material, by passing on the original 1964 Olympic mainsail of the silver medal winning boat S-37 to her today's owner Burkhard Pflug, who will be hoisting the sail aboard "Rush VII", during the Vintage 5.5m Meeting in June next year.

Switzerland

Nearing completion, Alain Marchand is showing new pictures and giving detailed information about his design project 5.5 SUI 227 "CinqueCinque", on his website: http://www.alain-marchand.com/Site_AM08/New_5.5IC.html

Also, the file for SUI 227 in the 5.5m Inventory has been opened: www.5.5inventory.org/SUI/227

We do look forward to be getting to know the final product, soon.

USA

As the design of new 5.5m boats shall be in focus for all those involved in this Class, the launch of SUI 227 might be a good time to consider the next construction plans sitting in the drawer of a designer. Daniel Rossi, owner of two 5.5's and successful designer of modern racing yachts for his Eastcoast USA home waters, has presented this first sketch:

If launched in the USA, she will be getting the sailnumber 5.5 USA 100 - otherwise maybe a BAH, GER, NED, NOR, or a SUI number? When interested in a widening variety of designs racing for front rankings, talk to Dan: Rossi Engineering http://www.rossi-engineering.com/otherdesignsplans.html

Including the boats having shown interest, we do so far already count 15 boats from 6 Nations. For the event 20+ boats from 7+ Nations are being expected.

Boats 4 Sail

If we would have to choose a boat of the month in each category, this month of November the top boats are these:
  • Modern: 5.5 SUI 193 > Perfect for the Lake of Geneva, to compete with SUI 192
  • Evolution: 5.5 NED 11 > Perfect for Flensburg, to compete with GER 37 & AUS 60
  • Classic: 5.5 FIN 51 > Perfect for Nynäshamn, to compete with SWE 24
Please make sure to inform the International Class racing@5.5class.org about boats which are lying idle, in order to see these boats racing again. The Class is keen to arrange these boats being placed in waters where they will find suitable competitors, age- & speedwise.

And then, having mentioned new designs, we currently have more than 5 design options to choose from, for new boats.
