For the second time the Dutch & German 5.5m Class Associations have held their Open Championship together; after Braassem last year, this time in Berlin. The aim had been to get bigger participation and to reduce travel needs for our friends from other countries.
And - it worked out well! The previous average number of participating boats racing has been significantly surpassed, reaching 34 boats in the entry list.
Three examples, one per category:
Classic, designed in 1950, by E. Cornu:
"Gilliat" - the former FRA 1
Evolution, built in 1992, by MELGES Boat Works, USA:
"Sinewave 5.5" - the former USA 97, AUS 82
Modern, built in 2003, by WILKE of Switzerland:
"Caracole" - the best Swiss boat in the event at the VSaW
Maybe the combination of alternating Open Championships can be an example to copy for AUT & ITA, later also for SWE & FIN.
The combination of the Dutch & German Open Championships continues next year on Ijsselmeer, possibly mid-August. Once the date & harbour location have been finally set, book racing in Holland for 2014!
Yours,
Kaspar Stubenrauch

Denmark
The Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY) has formally invited the Int. 5.5m Class to participate in the Tuborg Meter Regatta in 2016, to be held in honour of the 150 years KDY Anniversary and has offered to be willing to hold a World Championship for the Class, on Oeresund, North of Copenhagen. It will have been 50 years then, since the last 5.5m World Championship was hosted by KDY, back then won by Poul Elvstroem.

France
The European Championship in Benodet has seen additional entries, the latest ones being ITA 36, SUI 215, GER 70 and GER 42.

Germany
Still puzzled by the Berlin event, the German Class Association was happy that many boats had moved on to Glücksburg, on Flensburg Fjord, meeting for the Sterling-Cup. For a regional regatta the starting list was showing a nice number of 17 boats from 5 Nations, with again a good mix of boat categories.

The "Sünnschien Preis", the annual 5.5m autumn regatta on the Alster Lake in Hamburg, will not take place this year, as the NRV is rebuilding his Clubhouse. The NRV and the German Class Association have made a call to all potential participants to consider travelling to the Lake of Thun instead, to join the "Herbstpreis" of TYC, at the same October weekend.

Norway
The Norwegian travel community is growing, as the Modern boat "Old Fox" (NOR 63) has changed hands and the new owners are planning to travel South, next year. The German Class Association has offered storage options in Northern Germany, to ease approach to the races in the Netherlands, Germany and maybe even Switzerland.

On the Lake of Thun the Swiss Open Championship has been held, tune in for more:

Daniel Rossi is looking for historic images of 5.5 USA 51, 5.5 MEX 1 and 5.5 CAN 44, as he is trying to complete the history of his boat, "Purple Haze", built by Vator. The designer and year of construction have not yet been determined.

Boats 4 Sail
If we would have to choose a boat of the month in each category, this month of August the top boats are these:
- Modern: 5.5 NED 33 > Perfect for Kiel, to compete with GER 42 & GER 55
- Evolution: 5.5 NED 11 > Perfect for Flensburg, to compete with GER 37
- Classic: 5.5 UKR 2 > Perfect for the Lake of Starnberg, to compete with GER 12 & GER 64
In addition, have a look at the Classified ads, on the International 5.5m website.
And, continue to contact the International Class, for information on boats which are looking for new ownership, in order to see these boats racing again:
Not all of these boats are officially advertised, but known and the Class is keen to see the boats placed in waters where they will find suitable competitors, age- & speedwise.
And then, there is always a chance to consider a new one. With currently more than 5 design options to choose from, chances for gaining speed by new developments are on the table.
