In the Netherlands, scientific studies are underway, to get this extra edge of competitive advantage. While the Dutch have proven positive effects in greenhouse growing of fruits and vegetables, several trials shall show positive effects on boats as well. In controlled temperature conditions and with a well dosed amount of water added, the Length of Waterline on the boats is being checked constantly.
Trial candidates
In case you do not want to believe this, in science there is always proof for evidence available. In a previous study, sails have been subject to treatment, with impressive results. While the details of treatment and scientific data have not been published, there has been access to pictures of the material used.
Jib project
The upper battens in several jibs had made their way upwards. Before going into testing efficacy though, physical treatment was needed to bring the battens down again to the position, which the current rules do demand.
The next study is under preparations now, involving foil sails. We have been able to get a first look at tests, being done on a camouflaged vehicle in order not to get things published too early. But, as our eyes are wide open, we have the pleasure to present things, in time.
Foil sails
As most of you are in preparations for the next races, please do check your rules & equipment thoroughly, making sure all is in line with the measurement certificates; and that these are showing validity.
Then, we will be able to enjoy boat & crew performance in harmony.
Yours,
Kaspar Stubenrauch

Italy
The "Alpen Cup" will be hosted by CVT in Torbole at the end of April, the NOR & entry forms are available online and the World Champion has announced his participation. While this regatta has been a mere Modern event over the years, it is open to all 5.5m categories. Owners of Evolution and Classic boats are invited to contact the International Class [ racing<at>5.5class.org ], in order to coordinate participation of a good number of these boats.
The Italian Open will be sailed on Lago Maggiore, in mid May. Please look at the Italian 5.5m Website for details.

The Netherlands
The most beautiful Dutch 5.5m Classic boat is the first NED boat to register for the combined German & Dutch Open Championship, to be held in mid July in Berlin. Also other Classics will find perfect racing conditions on Wannsee. Several Modern NED boats have announced participation; on the NED Evolution side of things, a bit of work is still needed.

Switzerland
Due to climate change, races on Lake of Thun over Easter were called off, but the sportive discipline of "Eiertütschen" was on and well enjoyed. The next races in Switzerland in the first half of the year will be the ones in May in Morges (Faini) and Rolle (Harpe), then "Silbercup" in Romanshorn in mid June and "Coupe Rothschild" in Geneva, end of June.
Adding to the recently published elaborate report on the 2012 Swiss Class activities, the winner of the Swiss Evolution Trophy in the past year is 5.5 SUI 154 "Mischa", having had a close finish in points with SUI 175. The deed of gift says, that the older boat wins in case of equal points, so here it is: Congratulations, Reinhard!
And the winner is: SUI 154 & Crew

Boats 4 Sail
If we would have to choose a boat of the month in each category, this month the top boats would be these:
- Modern: 5.5 NED 33 > Perfect for Lake of Geneva to compete against SUI 192
- Evolution: 5.5 SUI 148 > Perfect for Lake of Constance to Match-Race with SUI 154
- Classic: 5.5 AHO 3 > Perfect for the Classic Fleet in Kiel to compete against GER 1 & GER 72
In addition, have a look at the Classified ads, on the International 5.5m website.
And, continue to contact the International Class, for information on boats which are looking for new ownership, in order to see these boats racing again:
Not all of these boats are officially advertised, but known and the Class is keen to see the boats placed in waters where they will find suitable competitors, age- & speedwise.
On the Modern side of things, the Class has been informed about two top-notch boats - one good allrounder and one light wind jewel - on offer and will be pleased to pass information to interested sailors.
And then, there is always a chance to consider a new one. With currently more than 5 design options to choose from, chances for gaining speed by new developments are on the table. One new design is currently being built and expected to perform later in the year.
