Those having had the chance to view and participate in the Gold-Cup and World Championship Races in Curacao, met with the latest addition to the International 5.5m Fleet, Markus Wieser from Bavaria helming 5.5 GER 79 "Mission Possible". And, he gave the boatname a good follow-up, receiving the World Championship Trophy during prizegiving on February 1st.

Here is his Feedback:

"...The Worlds in Curacao was one of the most exciting projects, up to present day, in my sailing career. It all started out in mid October when I bought Od Lofterrods "Odlo" and ended with us winning the worlds! my boat "Mission Possible" made our dream come true!Sailing conditions were superb: sunny skies, warm waters with the trade winds blowing day and night at 18-25 knots! I cannot remember any similar sailing under such beautiful conditions. As a newcomer in the class I can only say: anyone who has never sailed on a modern 5.5m is definately missing out. A great boat, high level sailing, lots of fun and highly demanding for the crew.

See you soon on the race  course!!

Markus Wieser..."

Another first time participant has been Daniel Rossi, who arrived with family & Crew from the USA, to enter the Scandinavian Gold Cup Races.

Back in August 2011 we had decided, that the hosting club of an International Championship should organize the event, assisted by the National 5.5m Class Association. At the same time we voted in favour of Curacao and had been offered assistance by the Dutch Class Assocation. The amount of work coming up surpassed expectations and with help from his sailor friends, Kim Chabani became the mastermind of all.

Those who have not followed from very nearby, what it meant to set the whole thing up, cannot imagine the contribution Kim and his friends have been giving.

A short word in Dutch might sound little here: BEDANKT! We have tried to make it a point on tuesday night of the event - and will remember with great appreciation.

Germany

A proposal has been made by GER 55 and GER 79, to consider a winter time meeting in Southern European warmer climates, during the 2013/2014 winter months. Possible destinations are Loano, Valencia or Mallorca. Other suggestions welcome. Please contact:  racing@5.5class.org

Great Britain

The organizers of the Vintage Yachting Games have announced that the 2016 edition will be held in Weymouth, the dates being 17th to 25th of June 2016. While in 2012 the Class had sent the Vintage Classic boats to Lago di Como, for 2016 we do plan to send the Modern boats. As we have a limitation of 4 boats per Nation, it will be the National 5.5m Class Associations, nominating their participants.

Sweden

The meeting with Swedish 5.5m owners and visitors from neighbouring countries is taking place next weekend. In addition to the visit to 5.5 SWE 46 and 5.5 SWE 54, also SWE 33 will be on the list. Later in the day sailors will talk about joining for summertime races in Northern waters.

Boats 4 Sail

In recent months, quite a number of 5.5m boats have changed hands and well known active regatta sailors have joined the Int. 5.5m Class. Speaking in Stock Exchange terms, the recommendation still firmly reads: BUY! The offer of used boats is limited and prices will be on the rise. Please contact the International Class, for information on boats which are looking for new ownership, in order to see these boats racing again:

Not all of these boats are officially advertised, but known and the Class is keen to see the boats placed in waters where they will find suitable competitors, age- & speedwise.

And then, there is always a chance to consider a new one. With currently more than 5 design options to choose from, chances for gaining speed by new developments are on the table.
