When the fog is rising

Having experienced one of the most difficult navigational challenges - fog on the water - you will have thouroughly enjoyed the time, when a change in temperatures had visibility improved, ending with beautyful sunshine illuminating the scenery.

In a way we are in this process with activities in North America, where a number of boats have been hidden in unknown harbours, sheds and yards but finally having gone, going and going to go through preparations for future racing.

As to regattas with 5.5m participation in the USA in 2013, the dates for the "North American 5.5m Meeting" are now reconfirmed, for end August. The 5.5's have been officially invited by the Herreshoff Marine Museum for the "Herreshoff Classic Regatta", 23rd to 25th of August in Bristol RI. On Sunday the 25th a distance race is being organized from Bristol to Newport, where the Museum of Yachting is offering mooring for the participating boats. The following weekend, the "MoY Classic Yacht Regatta" will be held in Newport RI and again the 5.5's are invited to join in. Our Class has started contact to the owners known and a search message has been placed with "Wooden Boat" magazine, to get further boats involved.

The Herreshoff Museum has also invited the Columbia 5.5 Class to join the races. The Columbia 5.5's are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2013, a good occasion to have crews of boats from both Classes getting to know each other, participating in the "North American 5.5m Meeting".

In Canada, "Nantoria" has won several Club races on Lake Huron, with her PHRF rating constantly being put to new levels, which will be making regatta silver more difficult to achieve. So, the trailer is being prepared and a towing vehicle being searched for, to travel to Rhode Island next August, for exciting 1:1 racing.

While the Classic 5.5m boats & Columbia 5.5's are looking forward to joyful meetings in the future and the search for a number of 5.5m Evolution boats continuing, there is also development expected with new 5.5m designs, made in the USA. Daniel Rossi, who will participate with 5.5 USA 99 "Silver Fox" in the Scandinavian Gold Cup in Curacao, has at home been working on new design plans for a Modern 5.5m boat.
Future
Future development for the USA & worldwide
With the 5.5's racing again in the USA and in Canada, the next step for redevelopment will be taken in Sweden, another country with only a few boats being raced and several hidden. Also here, the sun is expected to shine again, on an active fleet.

The boat will be again ready to race, in March.

To all, whether virtually or in person: Welcome to Curacao!

Great Britain

The Daring Class has renewed their kind offering, to charter boats to interested Crews, who wish to enjoy summer racing during Cowes Classic Week, on the Solent. Here is more information, issued in 2012, but still valid for 2013.  [ Charter Info (pdf) & Charter Agreement (Word)]

More details on the racing activities in the UK can be found on the DARING Class Website:  www.daring.org.uk

Those considering sailing with a DARING on the Solent, may want to issue a counter offer to sailors from the DARING Class, to participate as crew or eventually charter a 5.5m boat, for example in Continental 5.5m Open Championships or maybe even in the European Championship, in September. Please pass your offers directly to the DARING Class.

Netherlands

The Dutch 5.5m Class Association has announced the details & registration link for the joint German & Dutch Open, to be held from the 18th to the 21st of July at the VSaW in Berlin, on the Dutch 5.5m Website. As the event is taking place in July, early registration & hotel booking is recommended.

Norway

5.5 NOR 67 is the first Norwegian boat, which has registered for the German & Dutch Open, in Berlin. The German Class Assocation will arrange for boat storage after the event, so that the NOR 67 crew can return later in the year for more International 5.5m racing.

Sweden

The meeting with Swedish 5.5m owners and visitors from neighbouring countries is now confirmed for the 2nd and 3rd of March, in Stockholm. It is planned to visit the  "Allt for Sjön" boatshow in Stockholm and also to look at 5.5 SWE 46 and 5.5 SWE 54, in their boatyards. 5.5m Sailors from GER & FIN plan to fly in, hoping to be joined by those from NOR & DEN as well. The dinner on Saturday evening shall offer chances to invite to races and to see, which currently unused boats can be reactivated or put into new ownership. Those wishing to join, please contact  racing<at>5.5class.org  for finalizing the agenda and a list of participants.

Boats 4 Sail

In recent months, quite a number of 5.5m boats have changed hands and well known active regatta sailors have joined the Int. 5.5m Class. Speaking in Stock Exchange terms, the recommendation now reads: BUY! The offer of used boats is limited and prices could be on the rise. Please contact the International Class, for information on boats which are looking for new ownership, in order to see these boats racing again:

Not all of these boats are officially advertised, but known and the Class is keen to see the boats placed in waters where they will find suitable competitors, age- & speedwise.

And then, there is always a chance to consider a new one. With currently more than 5 design options to choose from, chances for gaining speed by new developments are on the table.
