A major consumer goods company has been using this headline in recent advertisements, possibly after finding out, that today's consumers are showing frequent change of habits and little ambition for commitment. A difficult situation for a company depending on a constant brand development.
The reasons can be multifold, starting from the ever increasing speed & volume of information flow, supply change optimizing, widening of selection options, just-in-time expectations and last minute offerings.
What does this mean for our racing environment? Also here it is our intention to group as many interested persons as possible, but we do apparently come across similar decision patterns as the ad-company, mentioned before. The wide arrray of options to spend the free time, demands from family & friends to be present - not only on the water, short term corporate engagements, diversity of interests. All these can hinder an early decision to register for a race.
But, whom do we confront with the resulting uncertainty? It is the big number of volunteers at the sailing clubs, whom we have asked to arrange regattas for us. Why should these volunteers stay alert with long vision date reservations, while we enjoy a last minute decision liberty?
Our Class has the luxury of being small and yet long time connected. If we go for a race, it is not only for the challenge & silver, it is also meant to offer the chance for reunions. So, if it is about being among friends, let us work the way we do with a personal hand written invitation to our best friends home - once the invitation is received, we do make it possible to let our friend have an answer for a "yes" or a "thank you no" at the earliest convinience.
Therefore - Don't be a Maybe - if you see the registration options online, register directly or tell your National Class Association, that you cannot attend.
In the name of the International 5.5m Class and all Sailing Clubs involved: THANK YOU!
