Olympia Revisited

In 2012 we will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first Olympic Games with Int. 5.5m Class participation, 1952 in Helsinki. Starting to enjoy memories of the long lasting race history, Daniel Rossi who owns two 5.5m boats on the US-East Coast, has sent in this Link with a film from the 1960 Olympic sailing event in Naples, featuring the 5.5m Class prominently:

Olympic Sailing Regattas 1960, Naples:

During this anniversary year a big variety of race meetings in 10+ International 5.5m events is on offer, with National Championships from Norway to Australia, the Cups & Worlds, plus a multitude of local 5.5m races.

Coming back to the 1952/1968 memories: The Norddeutscher Regatta Verein, host for the Cups & Worlds in 2012, will be presenting special prizes to the fastest Vintage Classic 5.5m boats built for the 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968 campaigns respectively, in the races of the World Championship in September 2012.

So, let us during 2012 make it a special Welcome to those otherwise not standing in the limelight.

Yours,

Kaspar

Australia

The racing season has started Down Under, with five of the Sydney 5.5m fleet racing every Saturday out of Vaucluse Yacht Club . The weather has been very kind so far with mainly light breezes and temperature never getting much over 30C. Throughout the season - as part of class development - the Australian 5.5m Class Association is planning:

A Rules night with the support of the NSW Yachting Association, with them supplying one of their International judges to go through various scenarios such as the pre start and mark rounding's

A Tactics night with one of the Australian Olympic coaches, going through tactical options specifically developed for our style of heavy displacement yachts

A Trim night, with the support of one of the local sail lofts' professional sailors (Evolution Sails)

The highlight of the season will be the Australian Championships, which have been booked in for Thursday 8th and Friday 9th of March 2012, to which 12+ boats are expected at the starting line.

One of the boats expected to race at the North American 5.5m meeting in Buffalo next year is a VATOR built 5.5, building number 753. There is uncertainty on the design, year of construction and the original sailnumber. Please have a look at these pictures and send in comments on what your suggestions re the design would be.
