Sunny side up - North

While Central Europe was challenged by pouring rain, those who had planned to attend the biggest 5.5m event in the year in Helsinki, were given two weeks of wonderful summer climate, moderate to good winds and the beauty of the Southern Finnish Riviera.

The 90 sailors from 9 Nations and their companions could enjoy perfectly organized regattas with both major local Clubs: The NJK hosting the Scandinavian Gold Cup, the Hankoe Evolution Cup, the Royal Kaag Classic Cup and the Finnish Open, while the HSS was in charge of the World Championship.

After races, events included locally brewed beers, family-home cooked meals, a 5.5m model boat RC-race, visits to downtown and festive dinners.

5.5 Model Races

The whole event perfectly prepared and orchestrated by Matti, the mastermind of 5.5m racing in Helsinki.

Matti M.

One of the evening events meant a lot to all participants: Being invited and so warmly received in the Fazer family home made all of us remember, that the sailors of the class are long time friends and do enjoy relaxed hours off the race course as well. Those taking the ferry back, could wave to the Fazer gardens on saturday, carrying with them the task and motivation to welcome the Class again, in theirs, back home.

In the name of the International 5.5m Class, I would like to thank Matti & his wife & friends, the Fazer Family, the hosting Clubs, active members of the Finnish 5.5m Class Association, photographers, measurers, race committee members and jurors and last not least all those fearless long distance travellers who followed the suggestion, that Nordic climates definitely can feel Mediterranean style.

Yours,

Kaspar

Fleets' News

Bahamas

100% of the BAH fleet attended Helsinki, proving the long standing committment to & enjoyment with 5.5m racing - far away from home, from which we all know: "It's better in the Bahamas"!

Finland

A big number of participants came from local waters, standing out were 3 boats: FIN 49 with the longest active 5.5m sailor in the races, Jussi, who finished 4th in the Worlds and who had generously chartered his boat to a KSSS sailor friend, encouraging Swedish sailors to reconsider joining our races. Then, FIN 21, so excellently refurbished by Jyrki & Janne. And at the very top: FIN 50, helmed by Kenneth Thelen, to winning both the Scandinavian Gold Cup and the World Championship, CONGRATULATIONS!

France

Having the least time to prepare, Gurvan Jaouen & Crew came all the way from La Bretagne with "Korrigan" and if there had been such prize available, definitely they would have been honored with the "Best Dressed Crew Award"!

FRA 19

Germany

The German Class Association had sent 5 boats, welcoming a new team in the Modern category. Two GER boats could in the end bring back the Hankoe Evolution Cup and Evolution World Gold, respectively.

GER 30

Italy

28 boats in Italy; one of them especially active and successful: "Carabella", the speedy beauty from Lago Maggiore took the Royal Kaag Classic Cup the 7th time in a row and finished World Gold in the Classic division. Excellent sailors - any chance to see them outperforming the rest in a Modern "Carabella II" some time in the future?

 ITA 73

Netherlands

Both Dutch boats showed consistent performance within the top ten and NED 26 has been winning the Finnish Open. Back home they prepared for the Dutch Open, which NED 31 won against Swiss & local boats, last weekend.

NED 26

Norway

While NOR 57 finished very close to FIN 50 in the Gold Cup and got World Silver, the other NOR boats came across from Risoer, to enjoy Helsinki waters, proving that local club racing is an excellent training ground for International events, hopefully now convincing more fleet boats to come to future International events.

Sweden

The youngest Crew in the races, who have built their own boat, have again been showing their skills, by passing Evolution and even Modern boats in some races! World Silver in the Classic category; all smiles whenever met, mange tai!

Switzerland

The design development in the class is greatly driven by Swiss sailors and the example of SUI 222 winning World Bronze is proof of consistency and comittment, which we do very much appreciate! Another Swiss loyalty is non-tiring travel engagements to many National 5.5m Championships. And then, it is the art, to bring good new sailors to the Class, like Erik & Crew from SUI 192. MERCI VIELMALS!

To all 90 sailors a big Thank You for having been around - and for making it happen to be up to 150 next year! No dream, just a task.
