Modern Times

Of all Metre Class boats, the International 5.5m Class Association is enjoying the widest range of recent Modern boats and an ongoing phase of new designs being built. The latest one to meet its peers has been 5.5 SUI 226 "Shaolin III". Since the last winter 5 designers have shown interest to draw a new boat, this week another Naval Architect has contacted the Class, offering new ideas.

It is with the active 5.5m sailors, who have held Modern boats for several years to seriously consider making the next step to a new boat, passing the actual one on to younger sailors. At the same time, it is hugely important to convince sailor friends to join the class. Do invite your friends on board, to experience the fun and excitement of the latest designs.

In the end all of us wish to see the starting fields grow with the Modern boats playing the predominant role; so, make yourself part of the promotional team. For those, who have not yet been using the fabulous 2010 Torbole 5.5m World Championship film on the screens of their home Yacht Clubs, here is the link: http://www.5.5class.org/

Then, on to the 5.5m sailors who have filled their furniture at home with silver, having successfully and repeatedly won in the Classic and Evolution categories. It may now also be a good time to move on and to consider the demanding and at the same time rewarding feeling of sailing a 5.5m Modern boat.

A few very nice examples of these boats are on offer; not all publicly though, as it is understood, that some owners do not want to announce their next ideas, yet. So, please contact the Class Association for further details.

Yours,

Kaspar

Germany

The German Class Association had over the past years been setting up a number of 5.5m races in regional waters, in order to encourage locally idle lying 5.5m boats to return to racing activities. One of these regattas will this year see prominent International participation, as the first boat already registered for the "berlinger Yachtpokal" on the Lake of Constance, is 5.5 SUI 226 "Shaolin III". Now, it is for the other Modern 5.5's to join in, the nearest one being 5.5 SUI 217 from Romanshorn and the one in process of defending its title of the annual German Modern Trophy, 5.5 SUI 213 can see points made good in berlingen as well. For all others, travelling from the Dutch Open to the Italian Open, berlingen is "en route".

Netherlands

The Dutch 5.5m Class Association is inviting to the Dutch Open in August, very well placed "en route" for those returning from Helsinki. In order to reduce Regatta-Kilometers on the motorway, the ideal option is to drop off the boats in The Netherlands, travelling on to work, to then return back to the Aalsmeer. Please contact the Dutch fleet for further details.

Switzerland

The Swiss Fleet is looking at the latest boat addition, with Gilbert Martinet moving from Evolution (5.5 SUI 152) to the possibly most beautiful Modern boat of them all: The precious mahogany jewel of late Christian Hauvette will become 5.5 SUI 225.
