New boatyard for the Class

To the well known boatyards in Tannay, Leissigen, Cowes, Stäfa and many other places, we can now add a wooden boat specialist from Lübeck Bay in Germany. Ulli Schütte, boatbuilder from Niendorf, is entering the scene and will be offering 5.5m boats to interested sailors: http://www.niendorfer-bootsbauerei.de/  Ulli Schütte would also be the one to be building the new Modern design, which is planned to be finalized in autumn this year.

As far as further growth of the class is concerned, there is contact with sailors in Sweden and in the Netherlands, who are seriously looking into the purchase of 5.5's, for participation in future races, including the option to participate in the Cups & World Championship in Helsinki this year.

The International 5.5m Class Association is getting such requests mostly for Evolution boats, being the perfect entry category. In order to make the offering as wide as possible we do encourage owners of idle lying boats, to consider letting them race again:  http://www.5.5class.org/classifieds/wanted/wanted.html

For the most prominent summer event, the Cups & Worlds in Helsinki, our Finnish friends will be presenting the Notice Of Race early next week. The NOR will be sent to the National Class Associations and to our contacts in the "build-up" countries, who will then inform their boat owners.

The NOR will also be presented on all 5.5m websites, for download. With Cup races sailed in all categories - Royal Kaag Classic Cup, Hankø Evolution Cup and Gold Cup - it is worthwhile to come North for the complete time of races.

We do hold information on ferry connections and special offers for transfer from Lübeck respectively Rostock to Helsinki. Early booking is recommended, as we do sail in High Season! Please contact us for further information.

Do not miss this exciting opportunity to race in the beautiful Helsinki skerries adn to enjoy the social events at the famous NJK and HSS Yacht Clubs.

Yours,

Kaspar

Fleets' News

Australia

The Australian Championships have taken place in Sydney Harbour last weekend, excellently organized by the Vaucluse Yacht Club. One of the participating boats has been 5.5 AUS 33 "Robbie", which had finally been relaunched by her new owner, Barbra Zussino, after a 17year spell out of the water: www.5.5inventory.org/AUS/033  Also, 5.5 AUS 26 "Baragoola" has had a major refit over the past four months and she was again fit to go for the races: www.5.5inventory.org/AUS/026

A full report and result lists will be published shortly and can then be seen in the NEWS section of the International 5.5m website. Dave has already sent in a link to images taken during the races, here is a first selection, taken by Beth Morley. Click here.

Click on any of the recent pics at the top to bring up the gallery; or also at the bottom of this page are the names of all the galleries so you will be able to see the 5.5's there in its own gallery.

Canada

Peter McDonald, co-owner of 5.5 AUS 16 "Pam", is living at the moment in Canada and has been following the Australian races virtually from there. We will put him in contact with John Lister, who plans to be building a group of active 5.5's in Canada and we do hope that Peter will join in. Here is the link to the Canadian data: http://www.5.5class.org/5.5-in-canada.html

Germany

The project of a new 5.5m design being built during the next Hamburg boatshow is getting into final stages. The calculation has been made, the price tag of this special boatshow offer will be very attractive and will cover the design, boat, rig, sails & equipment. There is serious interest shown by a German sailor, but also here - speed counts - the boat will go on a first come first serve basis.

Interested sailors are asked to contact the German 5.5m Class Association.  www.5point5.de

Norway

An excellent example showing how 5.5m racing can be developed on local level is the Risør Fleet in Southern Norway. Over the years a good number of 5.5m boats has been joined up. The boats shown in Risør harbour have just now been presented in the 5.5m inventory:

NOR Risoer Fleet

Other 5.5m Nations are invited to follow the idea of the Risør fleet, building locally active 5.5m groups. The boats might not be travelling to the big International events, but with constant racing & harbour activities they do show and therefore positively promote the class to other sailors.

Switzerland

In Switzerland the mountain slopes have been racing terrain again in and around Gstaad. Combined with the "Herbstpreis" on the Lake of Thun last Octobre, the results have been joined:
