Rising Numbers
Following the example of the boat count established by Owen and Robin Aisher back in 1962, known as the "Aisher Questionnaire", we have gone through another boat count, reflecting all the actually existing 5.5's in the World.
From the files sent in by the National Class Associations, we can as per today name 371 boats as being in existence, of which 204 are Classic, 124 Evolution and 43 Modern 5.5m boats. To these, several boats will be added in the time to come, as not all Classic boats have been found, while the data for Evolution and Modern is almost complete.
We have a country with most boats overall, another one showing all boats in the country as being active, then one showing the biggest fleet of active boats and one with the best growth rate in racing fields, while there are countries with quite a number of boats but none of them active in 5.5m races yet.
I do not mention the details for not bothering you with statistics. But there is one, quite important number of them all: Only 95 of those 371 boats are active in 5.5m racing, 52 are sporadically active and I do see a good chance to bring more boats to the races, even though this for some might only be on regional level.
It will be with you, the individual sailors and with the National 5.5m fleets to reactivate some of those hidden treasures.
Good luck!

Fleets' News
The Norwegian Fleet is announcing to hold their Norwegian 5.5m Championships during Hankö Race Week, traditionally presenting the "King Olov Cup" to the winning team. More details will be announced.
Those boats travelling to Hankö will have good access to Helsinki for the Worlds. The other boats planning to go via Travemünde can follow the example of Ulf Stetter from GER 70, who struck a deal with Finnlines, 20% off the tariff, for all World Championship participants, travelling both ways. Full details & travel times can now be provided, please contact: GER70@5point5.de
The German Class Association has just been invited out for "Boßeln", a Northern German ball sport, played walking in snowy conditions. Good fun and an excellent occasion to talk about the upcoming season, which will have the celebration of 10 years of the German 5.5m Class Association as key event, during the German Open. For more information about the races, please contact: skipper@5point5.de
With the arrival of three 5.5's in Curacao, we can add another group of boats to our fleet list. As the islands are having their own Sailing Federation, we will see the boats sailing under AHO sailing numbers. More information on sailing activities in the Carribbean, can be found on the website of the Netherlands Antilles Sailing Federation:
Preparing for the first race of the year, 5.5 enthousiasts are in the booking phase for going to Gstaad in early March. They do look forward to enjoying a pre-season meeting and to race the second part of the "Herbstpreis"-results, to see, which team will be the winner of that Ski-Yachting event. For more information on the races, please contact the Swiss 5.5m Class Association: www.5point5.ch
Richard Leupold, president of the Italian fleet is reminding owners of Classic and wooden Evolution 5.5m boats to consider the Portofino Rolex Trophy, the top-event on the Mediterranean coast in May, for their calenders. Being an invitational race, it is important to contact the Italian 5.5m Class Association, first: Richard.Leupold@gmail.com
