Reported cases of Legionnaires' disease in the United States have jumped more than 260 percent since 2000, but the true number could make annual cases of the disease more common than brain cancer, leukemia or HIV, a Tribune-Review investigation has found.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded fewer than 400 cases of the deadly form of pneumonia in the 1990s. Then in 2000, the cases exploded to 1,100. By 2011, about 4,200 cases were reported, according to CDC figures obtained by the Trib.

VA Dental Clinic: Bacteria Issue Solved |

The Columbus Veterans Affairs dental clinic recently resumed use of its plumbing system after elevated bacteria levels forced clinic workers to use bottled water exclusively for six months.
Bacteria counts had spiked intermittently in the waterlines since the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center opened in Whitehall in 2008.
But the most-recent tests of the clinic's water supply, in February, found no waterlines had bacteria counts that exceeded 500 colony-forming units per milliliter.

More than 25 million American children, adolescents and adults currently have a diagnosis of asthma.
Previously it was thought that underlying allergies were only prevalent in children with allergies. In fact, almost 80 percent of children with asthma have underlying allergies, so perhaps that was not necessarily the case with adults with asthma.

Pupils at Risk From Air Quality in UAE Schools |

DUBAI - Children may be losing concentration in class and taking more time off with illness because of poor air quality in schools.
Tests in five state and three private schools over a period of eight hours found excessive levels of carbon dioxide in one classroom and of volatile organic compounds elsewhere.
Few schools realise air quality affects the learning process, said Dr Moshood Fadeyi, an assistant professor at the British University in Dubai who is overseeing the air-quality study.
