One emerging organisms is Staphylococcus aureus which has been isolated within the evaporator coils of HVAC systems.

According to a recent study supported by the US Army Material Command entitled Characterization and Control of the Microbial Community Affiliated with Copper or Aluminum Heat Exchangers of HVAC Systems, microbial growth within heating ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems with the subsequent contamination of indoor air is of increasing concern. Researchers reported microbial contaminants can result in numerous adverse effects on human health and well-being, including inflammation and infections. Airborne bacteria and fungi have the potential to adversely impact human health by causing infections, allergic responses, or toxic effects.

The Joy of Fungal Sex: Penicillin Mold Can Reproduce Sexually, Which Could Lead to Better Antibiotics ...Penicillin-producing fungus, previously thought to be asexual, has a sexual side. The finding is the latest in a kind of sexual revolution in fungal genetics

by Marissa Fessenden | SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN

By turning off the lights, setting up an oatmeal-based bed and slipping some extra vitamins into their food, researchers have persuaded the supposedly asexual mold that makes penicillin to have sex. The fungi's ability to switch it up sexually could help industrial scientists breed more efficient antibiotic-producing strains or even lead to the discovery of new, useful compounds.

Penicillium chrysogenum is the original and still-used source of penicillin. It creates a nitrogen and carbon ring structure called beta-lactam, which...

Certain Jobs May Still Pose Risk for Asthma

iVillage Entertainment | HealthDay

Exposure to chemicals at work causes many cases of asthma, especially for plumbers, spray painters and hair stylists, a new study finds.

Researchers in Sweden found many workers are exposed to toxic substances while doing their jobs despite public warnings that they use protective equipment.

The international study involved more than 13,000 adults in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Estonia. Cases of asthma -- one of the most common adult diseases -- were tracked from 1980 to 2000. The total incidence of new cases was 1.3 asthma per 1,000 men, and 2.4 per 1,000 women...

Scientists Notch a Win in War Against Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria "With precious few new antibiotics in the pipeline, we are finding new ways to harness and exploit certain aspects of bacterial physiology."

by Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard | sciencedaily.com

A team of scientists just won a battle in the war against antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" -- and only time will tell if their feat is akin to the bacterial "Battle of Gettysburg" that turns the tide toward victory.

They won this particular battle, or at least gained some critical intelligence, not by designing a new antibiotic, but by interfering with the metabolism of the bacterial "bugs" -- E. coli in this case -- and rendering them weaker in the face of existing antibiotics, as reported today in Nature Biotechnology.

It's the "kick 'em when they're down" style of fighting...

Capri Sun Juice Makers Release Statement on Mold Found in Pouches

by 23ABC News | turnto23.com

After pictures of Capri Sun juice pouches containing mold went viral on social media sites, like Facebook, the Capri Sun officials released a statement earlier this month.

...Complaints on mold in juice has happened before...

While we have not had the opportunity to examine the affected product, the substance appears to be mold. When we have had the chance...
