The flu epidemic has continued to spread rapidly throughout United States and Canada, where the number of affected states has increased to 44

Washington, DC -- This past week the city of Boston declared a public health emergency as it tried to deal with an unusually harsh flu season and the state reported 18 flu-related deaths so far.

CBS News Chicago reported in Illinois that 147 people were admitted to intensive care at hospitals, and six deaths have been reported - so severe that Chicago hospitals have been turning patients who aren't in severe condition away.

by Clare Trapasso AND Greg B. Smith / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

MONTHS AFTER Hurricane Sandy left their homes a wreck, dozens of Rockaways households are still living without heat and in homes coated with toxic mold, a new survey has found.

The nonprofit New York Communities for Change canvassed thousands of homeowners shortly after the Oct. 29 storm, then revisited 200 families in the last two weeks.

The results - set for release Wednesday - portray the Queens peninsula as neglected by relief agencies, including insurers, the city and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Source materials provided by Umeå University | sciencedaily.com/releases

A number of studies have previously shown that there is an association with being born during a pollen season and an increased risk of allergies. Although the pollen season is a regular annual event, there are large variations between years in pollen levels. Few studies have closely examined the significance of actual pollen content in different time periods before and after birth, but now, researchers at the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Umeå University have conducted such a study involving 110,000 pregnancies in the Stockholm area.

The researchers note that high levels of pollen exposure during the last 12 weeks of pregnancy resulted in...

More Than 8 Weeks After Sandy, Rockaway Residents Still Face Major Mold Problems

by TheYeshivaWorld.com | WCBSTV

Life after Superstorm Sandy includes a health hazard that is sometimes pesky, sometimes serious and continues to keep many out of their homes.

Now some are saying the city should be doing more to help get rid of it.

City Hall is being accused of not doing enough.

A new survey by the New York Communities for Change said 65 percent of Rockaway residents still have mold or paid for its removal and that "..mold has been growing in thousands of households."
