A note from the Principal...

As the holidays approach I can't help but think of the many blessings that have influenced my life; my faith, a loving family, my good health and a rewarding career. My education is another one of those blessings. Thank you for doing your part to see to it that your child is bestowed an educational blessing.

As winter approaches and the weather grows colder, please don't forget to provide your child with a warm coat, hat and gloves. Recess is scheduled daily unless there is heavy precipitation fall or the wind chill is 20 degrees or below.

If your child is ill, be sure and call the office and let the secretaries know. If an absence is not verified by the parent or guardian through Autodialer or a call to school, it is noted as unexcused. Also, children should be free from fever for 12 hours without medication before returning to school. Feel free to call the school nurse if you have health questions.

In closing, thanks to everyone who participated in the Caring Hearts food drive, it was a huge success with an estimated 30 boxes of food gathered. Go to the Maize Elementary School website  www.usd266.com/MES to see pictures of the food drive and other events. A big thank you, also, to the parents of second and third grade students who attended the music programs.  Your participation made the event that much better. I thought the music, choreography, costumes and props were outstanding.

I hope you had a safe, warm and enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday.

Mike

HUDDLE UP

We have just finished our soccer unit and 1st and 2nd grade students have learned their next 4 bones. The third graders are learning three  more difficult muscles. Their test is coming up soon! We have also just started a nutrition unit. If you get a chance ask your kids if they know what food group their foods would go in at dinner time. This is a great way to see if we are eating a balanced meal. The timed runs/pacer tests will be done before Winter break. Happy Holidays to everyone and keep moving!

IMPORTANT: The last day to order Y-TIES is on January 8th. Please make checks out to MES.

FROM THE NURSE

Skyward Health Information

It is the responsibility of the parent to update medical information and contact numbers in Skyward Family Access during enrollment and throughout the school year. Teachers, coaches and other school staff rely on Skyward for important health information like asthma, seizures, diabetes, and food allergies. In addition to updating Skyward, the parent/guardian must also personally communicate this information to the school nurse who will educate and train the appropriate staff.   If parents and/or student have questions regarding school guidelines and policies in keeping students safe and healthy at school, please contact the school nurse.

Holidays Risky for Spreading Infection

National Influenza week is December 8 to 14. It's not too late to vaccinate! There are fewer school days in December and more family get-togethers. Many families will be traveling (some a great distance) or hosting others from near and far. Mingling with people from other places brings the opportunity for exposure to infectious diseases, especially seasonal influenza. There is time to build immunity before the holidays. If you still need an influenza vaccine get it now before traveling or hosting company! Check www.flu.gov for local providers. And remember to teach your students about the importance of cough and sneeze etiquette & frequent hand washing; avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth (the T-zone); contact a health care provider within 48 hours if illness develops; and stay home when ill.
The flu is a respiratory virus.  How do you know if you have the flu or a cold.  Click here to learn more. Have a happy and healthy winter.

WEATHER RELATED CLOSURES
In the event of school being dismissed because of inclement weather, a phone notification will be sent to the primary residence phone number.  Calls will start going out as early as 5:30 am on the day of the closure.  If a decision is made the night before to call off school, calls will go out until 10:30 pm.  Families and staff may consult other sources of information to determine if school will be closed.  The district's website, www.usd266.com, will be updated as soon as the decision is made to call off school and local media will be contacted in traditional methods.

Maize WayThe Character Trait for December is:
Generosity
Giving to others who are in need, being kind and unselfish, and thinking of others before yourself.
