NEWS FOR THE WEEK OF June 10, 2015
Youth Serve from Lexington to Guatemala
Seven faithful pilgrims from the Diocese of Lexington have spent the last several days in Guatemala, our companion diocese. This youth pilgrimage was organized by Diocesan Deacon for Christian Formation Lauren Villemuer-Drenth. The pilgrimage was designed for youth from parishes that could not sponsor their own mission trip. The youth have been sharing God's love and growing in grace by working in a local orphanage.

The accompanying pictures and the words below from some of the pilgrims will tell their story:

Today was our first day of construction. We got to the new home around eight and began working. Our jobs varied from working on plumbing to digging the remainders of the wall up. It was hard but it was fun. I spent the day digging up the wall, we accomplished a lot and I learned many new skills. We have already gotten a lot done......The kids are amazing and are so loving. We are becoming fast friends with them. I love talking with them and catching on to the Spanish they speak. (Grace)

We went to the park with the children from the orphanage. We did a cookout for them. They loved the hot dogs. After the cookout we told them the story of Moses and Pharaoh. April and Julia brought costumes for the children. They loved acting out the story. They brought two piatas. The children had a wonderful time. Eleanor's bought shoes and sanders for the children. They were so excited to receive them. We were blessed to see their happy faces. (Clarita)

Today we worked at the new Children's Home painting, digging and removing bricks. We got the new bathroom entirely painted and both holes completed. The bricks we removed from the side of the house opened up an area to add a cistern. Afterwards, we walked to the Children's Home and made tie-dye shirts with the kids.... The extreme poverty we've seen this week along with the gratitude and optimism has opened our eyes to appreciate all we have and yearn to give back to Gods world. (April)

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this trip but I've been surprised every step of the way... I expected to see poverty, but the way people are forced to live here is a punch in the gut and a wound to the soul. The children at the orphanage are nothing short of a miracle! They are so full of joy and happy to see us. It's clear that they are loved and feel free to spread their own love to all who come to see them. We've played games, told stories and made crafts, but interacting with them even though the language is a barrier is the greatest joy....God's peace and love to all back home. (Julia)
