Elise Johnstone is announced as Canon to the Ordinary
Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I am pleased to announce that I have called the Reverend Elise Johnstone as Canon to the Ordinary for the Diocese of Lexington. In this role she will assist me in realizing our vision of the diocese. Her special focus will be on the health, growth, and development of our congregations, the nurture and call of priests, and broader tasks of helping all baptized persons discern and grow into their call to ministry.

Mtr. Johnstone is a fine priest with many skills and attributes for this work. She is well known and respected in the diocese and beyond. She is smart, enthusiastic, hardworking, well organized, and committed to collegial ministry. Most importantly she loves the Church and is a faithful and devoted servant of Christ.

Mtr. Johnstone knows this diocese well, having grown up in Madison County, Ky. During her early formative years she was active in Christ Church Richmond and St. Hubert's, Clark County. Since returning to Kentucky several years ago she has served Good Shepherd, Lexington and Holy Trinity, Georgetown, where she is currently Priest in Charge.

Mtr. Johnstone has served the wider church in many capacities. She has worked closely with our diocesan clergy formation process and served as chair of the diocesan liturgy commission, interim chair of the Commission on Ministry, and member of the Commission on Ministry to Colleges. She has been active in The Episcopal General Convention and is chair of our 2015 General Convention deputation. She has helped organize St. George's Day, diocesan annual convention, ordinations, clergy family day, and the recent Bishop's clergy mission to the mountains. She is a member of the executive committee of the Kentucky Council of Churches, and was an invited consultant to a national convocation developing effective liturgy for small churches, held last year at Virginia Theological Seminary.

Mtr. Johnstone is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where she was active in Episcopal Campus Ministries, and General Theological Seminary, where she was chief sacristan. She is pursuing doctoral studies at the University of the South.

Elise is married to Ryan Shrauner, a librarian who is ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA). They have one son, Walter, who is 4.

Mtr. Johnstone says of this new call, "I am humbled and excited about serving Bishop Hahn and the Diocese of Lexington as the Canon to the Ordinary in a time where many do not know the life-transforming love Christ has for us. You are the Diocese of Lexington and it is my hope that I can assist Bishop Hahn well so that we can all engage in the gospel mission."

Join me in giving thanks for the Reverend Elise Johnstone's willingness to say yes to this important call. Join me in welcoming her as a fellow servant of Christ in God's mission in our beloved Diocese of Lexington.

Christ's Peace,
The Rt. Rev. Douglas Hahn
