Clergy Engage Mountain Mission in Harlan, Middlesboro, and Corbin |
Last week 23 clergy from across the diocese joined Bishop Hahn for three days of mountain mission in the southeast corner of our diocese. As part of God's mission they cooked and shared a meal with residents of Everlasting Arms Shelter in Corbin, cleaned and restocked Christ's Hand's Ministry in Harlan, and cleaned and beautified a public space as part of Discover Downtown Middlesboro, a mission to revitalize common life in that town.
The deacons, priests and bishop met members of St. Mary's, Middlesboro; Christ Church, Harlan; and St. John's, Corbin - sharing incredible food and inspiring stories of life and ministry in the region. Additionally the clergy joined one another in times of prayer, bible study, and spiritual reflection.
"We went to build community among clergy, support our outlying parishes, and share God's love in public witness", said Bishop Hahn. "I believe we accomplished all this and more."

Presiding Bishop on abducted schoolgirls in Nigeria
|
The Episcopal Church is horrified at the violence perpetrated against innocent schoolgirls in Nigeria, and the willingness of those who should be addressing this to look the other way. The unfortunate truth is that girls and women are still deemed dispensable in much of the world, or at least of lesser value than members of the other sex. The necessary response is education - of girls and boys, in equal numbers and to an equal degree, that all might take their rightful place in societies that serve all their citizens with equal respect and dignity. I pray that all Episcopalians, and all people of faith and good will, will pray and plead with their political leaders to find the kidnappers, liberate these girls, and restore them to the safety they deserve. May God have mercy on us all.
