WaterBotics

WaterBotics Training Opportunity at 2014 ITEEA Conference

Stevens Institute of Technology is offering ITEEA members the opportunity to participate in a hybrid training course during 2014 for WaterBotics, a problem-based curriculum in which teams of students design, build, test, and redesign underwater robots made of LEGOs and other components. The course will kick off with a full-day pre-conference workshop at the 2014 ITEEA Conference in Orlando, FL, followed by four online modules, 2-3 hours each, during the spring 2014. Participants will receive free training, online support, WaterBotics curriculum, conference registration reimbursement, and a $300 stipend. Middle and high school teachers are encouraged to apply.

Please see www.waterbotics.org/iteea for more information and an application. Application are due November 15, 2013.

FREE ROBOTICS TRAINING

A new course is going to be offered by Rowan University

starting in October. It's a new, free, on-line version of the Lego Robotics course, sponsored by Google CS4HS.

So please tell anyone you know who might be interested in beginner robotics using lego mindstorms, or for those who might be in need of a refresher robotics course.

It's designed for teachers, but free and open to anyone, both teachers

and non-teachers.

STEM To STEAM- Princeton Univesity

Princeton University invites you to the 2013 Evnin Lecture on "STEM to STEAM: The Meaning of Innovation" presented by John Maeda, President of the Rhode Island School of Design.

Wednesday, October 2

8:00 p.m.

Friend Center - Room 101, corner of Williams and Olden Streets on the Princeton campus

(evening parking is available in Lot 10 off Williams St. behind Lewis Center for the Arts-185 Nassau and at meters in the immediate vicinity)

Presented by Princeton's Council on Science and Technology, the Lewis Center for the Arts, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Innovation, the pursuit of new ideas and technologies, is considered the crux of a thriving modern economy. In the eyes of many, however, innovation is tightly coupled with science, technology, engineering and math, known as the STEM subjects. But there's a crucial letter missing, says John Maeda, president of the Rhode Island School of Design - an "A" for art. Turning STEM into STEAM will strengthen the critical-thinking, decision-making and creative-leadership abilities essential to success and innate in art and design. Drawing on his experiences as president of one of the country's leading art and design colleges, Maeda will discuss an enlightened form of innovation for the next generation of leaders and creators, one where art, design, technology and business meet.

Real World Design Challenge Registration Available

The Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) is an annual competition that provides high school students, grades 9-12, the opportunity to work on real world engineering challenges in a team environment. Each year, student teams will be asked to address a challenge that confronts our nation's leading industries. Students will utilize professional engineering software to develop their solutions and will also generate presentations that convincingly demonstrate the value of their solutions. The RWDC provides students with opportunities to apply the lessons of the classroom to the technical problems that are being faced in the workplace.

Edison and the Rise of Innovation by Lenny Degraaf

Consider these credentials:

-Life Magazine- "Man of the Millennium"

-Voice of America- "Responsible for one-fourth of all the jobs on the planet"

-TIME magazine- "We need his example now more than ever"

Wait for it....it's Thomas Edison!

You can read about him and how he changed the world in a new book by Sterling Publishing, titled "Edison and the Rise of Innovation". Written by Lenny Degraaf, National Park Service archivist, and noted Edison expert, this delightful new volume is chock full of insight and rare photos of this American icon. The book has a big follower already, Bill Gates, who penned the foreword.

Every technology education classroom should have a copy of this wonderful book-a must have for those young minds waiting to be inspired, to see how one man and his philosophy of invention changed the course of economic progress.
