Summer Update #1June 2013
Greetings!

As the last weeks of summer come to close, I would like to send out a few back to school reminders and updates. Our STEM Boot Camp was extremely successful, largely in part to the enthusiasm of our members. Your input is greatly appreciated and enables us to best suit your needs, so we highly appreciate you feedback through the workshop surveys.

A big thank you goes out to our Boot Camp sponsor, Kid Wind. I will be sending out additional information in the next few weeks about the Kid Wind national competition being hosted this year. Our session presenter, Lynda, was enthusiastic about our involvement in the competition this year and felt that our students would benefit from the experience. Please anticipate Boot Camp materials to be posted in the next few days in the members only section of our website.

Enjoy your last weeks of summer and have a wonderful first week of school!
Makey Makey

If you thought that this was a picture of a child playing Super Mario with.. Play Dough.. You were absolutely right. The Makey Makey explores conductivity with students as it allows them to connect any conductor to the keys in their computer and play games, type words, or play instruments. If you have a few minutes, check it out!
New Jersey Cyber Aces
The State of New Jersey and Cyber Aces are inviting students across NJ to compete in a cyber security championship. The New Jersey Cyber Aces state championship is a free statewide competition to discover and develop NJ's top cyber talent.Students are encouraged to register in this program and we ask for your help in getting the word out, as registration opens on September 3, 2013.

NASA Competition Opportunities
A RFI [http://go.usa.gov/jtdJ] has been issued in FEDERAL BUSINESS OPPORTUNTIES for a new prize competition being considered by NASA.  As currently envisioned the Extreme Environments Challenge would focus on finding innovative solutions to the problems surrounding the survival and operations of scientific probes in extreme environments, such as on the surface of Venus where temperatures approach 500° C, the atmospheric pressure is about 90 times that at the Earth's surface, and the atmosphere is corrosive.  The approach being considered would entail a series of competitions that would focus on 1) electronics and mechanisms, and 2) thermal management, and 3) power with a culminating systems integration competition.

The purpose of the RFI is to (1) gather feedback on the competition being considered, the prize amounts and distribution structure, (2) to determine the level of interest in potentially competing in various phases of this Challenge, and (3) understand the applicability of the challenge capabilities for other terrestrial applications.

Potential competitors, technical experts, interested parties, and the public are encouraged review the RFI and to submit comments to NASA [HQ-STMD-CentennialChallenges@mail.nasa.gov] on the competition structure, requirements, and award metrics that should be added, modified, or deleted.

For more information about the Centennial Challenges program and descriptions of each of the challenge competitions, visit:  http://www.nasa.gov/challenges

FIZZ! The Flipped Classroom

Recently, through the Siemen's STEM Institute and Discovery Education, I was privileged to meet and spend time learning from Dr. Lodge McCammon. His presentation and study of "the flipped classroom" was not only innovative and interesting, but it works! I had been a long time believer that a flipped classroom meant that I would no longer have a job, his perspective and explanation encouraged me to personally give it a shot. Check out their webpage and let me know if you agree!

The FIZZ method refers to the use of extraordinarily simple video recording techniques that educators can use to transform teaching and learning. This method can be used to successfully flip the classroom by having teachers film and reflect on their lecture content. These teacher-created videos give students the ability to watch the lecture outside of the classroom, freeing up class time that can be used to challenge students to think critically and creatively. FIZZ provides a more rigorous and relevant education for a new generation of learners.
