Summer Update #1June 2013

Greetings!

As summer begins a new start to a new school year, the executive board welcomes changes in our executive leadership. As your former President-Elect and your new Executive Director, I would like to welcome Phil Capasso as our President Elect. Phil will see the position through President-Elect, President and Past President. Phil is an outstanding member of the NJTEEA and a technology educator with strong leadership ability. We hope that you will join us in welcoming Phil Capasso to this leadership role in our organization.

I was more than excited when I found out that I was elected as president-elect a few months ago. I am proud to step up to the position of Executive Director and truly look forward to work to continue to improve the organization by fostering the growth of new membership, obtaining additional sponsors and working with my colleagues to make sure that we are best suiting the professional needs of technology teachers across the state. The interview process for the position was competitive as the other candidates for the position were extremely well qualified and fantastic members of our association. I am honored to have been hired for the position and know that I will be with the organization for years to come, sharing the enthusiasm for technology with our exceptional membership.
iSTEM Program Request - NJSBA Workshop 2013 October 22-24

The iSTEM Program is looking for presenters for workshops at their upcoming conference. Although past media has indicated that the deadline for workshop proposals has past, please note that the deadline has been extended through the summer and that you are encouraged to apply to present this October.

Teachers who are interested in presenting their school's iSTEM program will have an opportunity to demonstrate to board of education members and administrators how iSTEM models are being successfully delivered in New Jersey schools.

Demonstration and resource topics to consider include the following:

  • iSTEM teaching and learning delivery method
  • iSTEM approaches and activities that motivate students and create an environment for problem solving and life-long learning
  • Guidelines to recognize essential components of an iSTEM best practices
  • iSTEM's contributions to help your students develop leadership qualities and skills that will prepare them to meet the challenges and needs of tomorrow's workforce
  • Resources and strategies that demonstrate the role of the board of education in implementing iSTEM

Presenting your school district's program through this opportunity will allow teachers to share their vision with programs that feature strategies that school boards can use to energize their districts, inspire change, and advance student achievement.

2013 Global STEMx Education Conference

The Global 2013 STEMx Education Conference is the world's first massively open online conference for educators which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and more.

The conference will be held online, around the clock, over the course of three days, September 19 - 21, 2013, and will be free to attend! Our founding sponsor is HP, and core conference support also comes from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

STEMxCon will be a highly inclusive and engaging event that will encourage primary, secondary, and tertiary (K-16) students and educators around the world to share and learn about innovative approaches to STEMx learning and teaching. Register at http://www.STEMxCon.com to be kept informed, and check out the conference information and menu links to the left and at the top of each page.

Edcamp STEAM

Edcamps are "unconferences," FREE, participant-driven professional development events where the attendees set the schedule and lead the sessions, which are conversations - NOT presentations. S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math (a variant of "STEM"). Edcamp S.T.E.A.M. is an unconference for K-12 educators exploring the intersection of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math. We are planning an incredible event full of rich discussions, cool demonstrations, plenty of hands-on learning and more. Join us on Wednesday, July 31 at Linwood Middle School in North Brunswick, New Jersey!
