Architecture and College Admissions Portfolio Workshop

Presenter: Former ITE Award Winner and High School Excellence Award Winner, Lisa Sokol (Technology Education Teacher)

Location: South Brunswick High School

Date: February 28, 2013

Time: 4-6pm

This workshop will focus on college admission portfolios for Technology Education students.  What are colleges looking for?  What else would be helpful to include? Acceptance into a university's architecture school is highly competitive, and often a portfolio is required.  Therefore, along with teaching students the basic fundamentals of architecture, which include drawn floor plans and building models, other activities that support a portfolio should be an integral part of the curriculum.

This workshop will answer the questions above and explore inspirational assignments for the creation of an architectural portfolio. Come for a "show & tell" sharing activities that students complete that are appropriate for a college admissions portfolio and the sharing of various design briefs.

NJTEEA Representation at the NJEA Convention

NJTEEA wants you and your ideas to be represented at this year's NJEA Convention in Atlantic City.  NJTEEA wants to have a workshop/presentation to be given at the NJEA Convention that is sponsored by the association and is representative of Technology Education and STEM.

We are soliciting ideas and workshop proposals for what you want to see.  We will review the workshop/presentation ideas and reach out to you if your idea was chosen.  We will then help you go through the NJEA workshop proposal process.  If your workshop is accepted by NJEA, the presenter is given a room for one night at an Atlantic City hotel.

Please complete the proposal by clicking on this link.

Virtual Medibotics Professional Development Program: The Merging of Medicine, Robotics, and Information Technology

Want to engage your students in learning STEM, through the use of Medical Robotics?

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is establishing an online version of its successful NSF funded Medibotics program, which can help teachers integrate the use of robotics, medicine and IT into their STEM related courses. We have started the program in this year with a first cohort of teachers, and are looking for a limited number of teachers, starting in early Spring 2013, to be part of the second cohort.

This program will consist of online professional development, covering the programming and construction of a supplied LEGO NXT Mindstorms for School kit, as well as detailed information on how to implement this kit into your STEM related coursework.

For more information on the original Medibotics Program, go to http://virtualmedibotics.org/

To request more information or an application for participation in this new Virtual Medibotics program, contact Levelle Burr-Alexander [email protected] or

call the Center for Pre-College Programs at NJIT, 973-596-6445.

This program is supported by a grant from the ExxonMobil Foundation

Mathletics and the World Education Games

3P Learning, an Australian company, has created Mathletics and the World Education Games as places students want to go and do Math, Science, and Spelling.

While pretty much unknown here in the US Mathletics has over 4 million students using the resource around the World.  We'd like to expose this resource to public schools here.  Can you direct me to Math and technology enthusiasts who might be willing to trial this resource.  Mathletics has a Student Center that is all about switching kids (K-12) on to Math.  It is fun, engaging, and highly instructional.

The Teacher Console provides for easy customization of content, progress monitoring, and differentiation for classes, groups within classes, and even individual students.  The Teacher Console also enhances teaching with technology by bringing conceptual understanding and open inquiry into Math classrooms.

Educate to Innovate: National STEM Video Game Challenge

Inspired by President Obama's Educate to Innovate campaign, Xbox 360 is proud to be part of the National STEM Video Game Challenge for the third year in a row.  On February 4th, this video game design contest will open to middle school

(5th - 8th) and high school students.  The Challenge is designed to improve the participation of America's students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. Game-based learning has emerged as one of the most promising areas of innovation in making STEM topics more engaging for America's youth.  Partners in this effort include Sesame Street Workshop, E-Line Media, ESA, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, PBS Kids and AMD Foundation.

This year's Challenge will have a special focus on reaching at-risk communities and increasing the mentoring opportunities among students, teachers and developers.  To this end, there will be kids and teacher workshops across the country from Feb - April.
