boot camp photo
Greetings!

Please find below information on the Aviation Museum in Tereboro's Open Cockpit Tours, registration information for our October workshops, TeenTech 2013 information, as well as a Samsung STEM Grant and Biomimicry Student Competition.  We are looking forward to seeing you at many of our professional development workshops this year!
REGISTER NOW:  Geocaching in the STEM and Technology Education Classroom Workshop (Oct. 17th) - Kittatinny Regional HS

NJTEEA invites you to learn about geocaching in the STEM and Technology Education classroom! Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. This workshop will serve as an introduction to the basics of Geocaching. We will cover what it is, how it works and its applications to teaching. We will also go over equipment and basic rules of the game. If time and equipment allows, we may "search for" a couple caches.

How can FIRSTŪ programs enhance technology and engineering learning?

Many know that FIRSTŪ is the ultimate experience in technology and engineering education, but how does it work? Do I need huge amounts of money, time, and energy to be successful?

It's time to demystify the experience and find out how FIRSTŪ programs can enhance a student's STEM experience in and out of the classroom.

Participants of this workshop will learn best-practices from FIRSTŪ teachers and mentors who have experience running teams from the program's middle and high school programs.

FIRSTŪ is an organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 that looks to inspire students to further pursue their interests in engineering and technology fields. Over $15 million in scholarship opportunities are offered to its students. It's the "Hardest fun you'll ever have."

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Applications Due

Samsung Solve for Tomorrow applications are being accepted through October 31st. By entering, schools have a chance to win up to $110,000 in technology grants.  The competition is open to public middle and high school classes...and there is not a limit on how many classes can enter from a particular school.  Also, applicants don't have to be Science or Math teachers.  Any teacher and their group of students...specials, AT, etc., can submit an application.

The way it works is teachers are asked to complete a short application.

From all entrants nationwide, 75 are selected to participate. Each of these 75 are then equipped with a camcorder, laptop, and video editing software to create videos addressing the challenge, "Show how STEM can help the environment in your community."

The top 15 finalists will win a technology grant worth at least $40,000.

Videos from those 15 finalists will be posted online for grand prize judging.  One will be selected as a "People's Choice" winner while four will be selected by an independent judging panel.  These five grand prize winners will receive an additional $70,000 in technology and cash for a total of $110,000 each.

The teacher and student representatives from each of the five grand prize winning schools will be brought to an awards ceremony in Washington D.C. and will meet with their Congressional representatives.

The full contest rules and additional information is posted at: www.samsung.com/solvefortomorrow .  You can also see examples of submissions from previous award winners at that web site.

Biomimicry Student Competition

WATER WISE: Biomimetic Solutions to Water Access & Management

Water. Without it, life on Earth would perish. Access to water is crucial for all organisms and the hydrologic cycle is also a critical driver in weather and climate patterns. Clearly, in order to survive and thrive on Earth we need to manage water wisely. During this year's Biomimicry Student Design Challenge we ask you to examine how nature manages this precious resource and apply what you learn to a local or global water challenge.

Up to $11,000 in cash prizes will be awarded over two rounds of competition.

REGISTRATION HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH NOVEMBER 2, 2012

FINAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 16, 2012
