National Endowment for the Arts Chairman to Visit Sacramento

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman, Jane Chu, will present new research on who participates in the arts and why and discuss how art impacts the economy on January 12th as part of a day-long visit to Sacramento. 

Following the overview, Dr. Chu will participate in a panel discussion with representatives from ZERO1, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, James Irvine Foundation and the City of Sacramento about the different ways artists and arts organizations are engaging audiences.   The panel will be moderated by Beth Ruyak of Capital Public Radio and broadcast later.

New Exhibition at the Board of Supervisors Chambers Gallery

 

For 46 years the RCAF has advanced Chicano arts and culture in Sacramento. While the RCAF is best-known for its posters, murals and visual art, its members also have a history of producing poetry, music, theater, media, photography and events. This exhibit honors the accomplishments of its members. �Que Viva La Causa!

Sign Up for Melody, Harmony and Rhythm Classes

Singers with Hart classes in melody, harmony and rhythm begin January 9th.  Designed to strengthen the skills of existing choral singers and those who wish to explore their potential, the classes are taught by professional musicians. Classes will be taught in four-week blocks beginning January 9th, February 6th and March 6th. Space is limited. Register today. Famous Sacramento Child Prodigy Turns 90


Ruth Slenczynska Kerr, a Sacramento native and at one time the most famous child prodigy since Mozart, turns 90 on January 15.  According to Julliard teacher David Dubal, "She became a household word in the late 1920's...Every parent wanted to have a little prodigy like that".  Though Ms. Slenczynska is highly regarded internationally as a pianist and piano teacher, her story is not well known in Sacramento. 

 

Born in Sacramento in 1925, Ruth is the daughter of Josef Slenczynska, a famous violinist from the Warsaw Conservatory, who moved to Sacramento after WWI to raise her. He began teaching her music theory and harmony when she was16 months old and by the age of three, had immersed her in a rigorous piano practice routine lasting nine hours a day. California State Summer School for the Arts is Accepting Applications from High School Students
Deadline to submit is February 28, 2015.

The California State Summer School for the Arts (CSSSA) invites all talented and motivated high school students to apply for admission to the 2015 summer session held from July 11 - August 7, 2015. Applications are found online at: csssa.org and are due on Saturday, February 28, 2015

CSSSA is the only state-supported arts summer school on the West coast. Students have seven artistic disciplines to choose from, including: Animation, Creative Writing, Dance, Film & Video, Music, Theater and Visual Arts. SMAC represents the program locally and encourages highly motivated high school students interested in these disciplines to submit their application by February 28, 2015. "Acorn Steam" is Gleaming Brightly

The artwork, "Acorn Steam" by Donald Lipski was cleaned in December.  The artwork is located at the Sacramento International Airport in Terminal B.  Visit SMAC's Facebook page to see more pictures of the cleaning.

Friends of the Arts Commission has launched a line of merchandise featuring Sacramento's own red rabbit "Leap" by Lawrence Argent. The sculpture is featured on t-shirts, baseball caps, journals, coasters and more.  To purchase them, go to www.friendsofsmac.org today. Funds raised through the sale of the merchandise will help fund arts education programs.

artspace1616 is opening on 1616 Del Paso Boulevard (located where The Temp Gallery used to be).  artspace1616 owners, Yasmina Begovic and her renowned sculptor husband, Numan Begovic present their opening art exhibition with paintings by Alejandro Rubio and David Mayhew, photography by David Garrison and sculpture by Numan Begovic.  artspace1616 contact: 916-849-1127.

Call to Artists - Sacramento Fine Arts Center

A free art exhibit open to new artists who have never shown in a juried exhibition. This annual art show is sponsored by Northern California Arts, Inc., located at Sacramento Fine Arts Center, 5330B Gibbons Drive, Carmichael, CA 95608. Hand deliver artwork on Saturday January 17, 2015, 11 am-3 pm. All media accepted, drawing, mixed media, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, photography, and sculpture. Open to artists high school age through adult. Show dates are January 27-February 14, 2015. Limit one art work, no entry fee. Enter your work - Juried Art Exhibit

This juried exhibition showcases current works by California sculptors. The exhibition goal is to provide a platform for a wide variety of concepts and materials. San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA) will host the 3rd California Sculpture SLAM at 1010 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401, 805.543.8562. Central Coast Sculptors Group (CCSG) is sponsor of this event. The Juror is internationally known artist, Bella Feldman. Submissions must be original, completed within the last two years and not previously shown in the SLO Museum of Art.  Find/Print Call for Entries. The Big Read
The Big Read is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to develop community-wide reading programs. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read receive a grant, educational and promotional materials, and access to online training resources and opportunities. Exploring Engagement Fund provides risk capital for arts nonprofits with innovative ideas about how to engage new and diverse participants. It supports experiments with engagement approaches that may be untried and unfamiliar, and profiles new projects that engage Californians in the arts.
