Councilmember Fong With Elected Officials Raise $$$ for Arts Education

Ten elected officials contributed to the success of Savor the Arts, an arts education fundraiser held on October 12th at Ella Dining Room and Bar. City Councilmembers Steve Cohn, Darrell Fong, Steve Hansen, Kevin McCarty and Rick Jennings, and County Supervisors Roberta MacGlashan, Don Nottoli, Susan Peters and Patrick Kennedy served dinner prepared by Chef Rob Lind to over 100 guests.

The event raised $23,000 for arts education programming in Sacramento's schools administered by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. Arts education helps prepare students for the 21st Century workforce, strengthening their creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills.  We extend our thanks to Ella and to Councilmember Darrell Fong for hosting this event. Click here to see more photos.

Mourning the Passing of Two Royal Chicano Air Force Members
Sam Quinones

We are greatly saddened by the passing of two Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF) members last month.

On October 3rd, Samuel Quiones died of a heart attack. Sam (pictured on the right) was a member of the RCAF.  Originally from Stockton, Sam's contribution to the arts was through his decades of photographing and video taping arts and cultural activities of the RCAF and other artists. He was known to all as a generous, warm and kind man. He was an electrician and owned his own business, often donating his services to the artistic and cultural community of Sacramento.

On October 7th, Juan Cervantes died from complications arising from a quadruple bypass. Juan (pictured on the left) was one of the founding members of the RCAF.  His life was about making art and teaching. He was a printmaker, a painter and a muralist.  Juan was raised in Roseville and took an interest in art at a young age. From his earliest years at Sierra College and CSU Sacramento, Juan lent his artistic work to promote images of Chicano history and culture and a hope for a better future. He worked in the California prison system for many years (as did many RCAF artists), before he taught high school and middle school students in Elk Grove. His early silkscreen posters are part of the Favela Collection at CSU Sacramento and CSU San Jose archives. His contribution to the RCAF mural in Southside Park, Sacramento, remains for all to enjoy.

The Royal Chicano Air Force is a SacramentoCalifornia based art collective, founded in 1970. It was one of the "most important collective artist groups" in the Chicano art movement in California during the 1970's and the 1980's and continues to be influential today.  The founding members include Jos Montoya, Esteban Villa, Ricardo Favela, Armando R. Cid, Juanishi V. Orosco, Rodolfo "Rudy" Cuellar, Luis "Louie the Foot" Gonzalez, Juan M. Carrillo, Joe Serna, Jr., Eva Garcia, Lorraine Garca-Nakata, Juan Cervantes and Max Garcia.
