15 Virtual Public Artworks Unveiled on Broadway

Broadway Augmented on view starting September 13

Eleven renowned artists from Sacramento, Canada, Spain, and around the country have created artworks that have been virtually installed along the Broadway corridor in Sacramento, California. The artworks were designed specifically for sites along the street and in the City's historic cemetery. They were then translated into computer-generated models, which can be viewed in the real-world environment using an Android or Apple smart phone or a tablet. The virtual public artworks, located throughout one of Sacramento's most eclectic transitional neighborhoods, will be on view beginning September 13 through October 31, 2014. The public is invited to a reception on September 13, 4:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Offices of Sacramento Republic F.C. at 2421 17th Street.

Viewers who download an Augmented Reality (AR) application (app) on their mobile device can follow a map within the app that indicates where the virtual artworks are located. Aiming the device's camera at a particular location (shown on the map) allows viewers to see - and in some cases interact with - the artwork sited at that location, in real-time. The free custom app will be available for download at the project website www.BroadwayAugmented.net, and the app store on September 13. There are fifteen projects by eleven artists: Michael Rees, Benjamin Hunt, Gioia Fonda, Rebecca Krinke, Sabrina Ratté, Chris Manzione, Rachel Clarke, Jose Carlos Casado, Joseph DeLappe, Malcom Cochran, and Mark Emerson. Several of the artists work in traditional media, while others are new media artists, some with an expertise in AR.

The project is funded in part by an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts with generous in-kind support from the Urban Land Institute, Center for Sacramento History, Sacramento Republic FC, Verge Center for the Arts, and Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. For more information go to www.BroadwayAugmented.net.

Beloved Sculpture Restored
Important public artwork finds new home at the Crocker Art Museum

In early January, 2013, "Sojourner", by Elizabeth Catlett, located at the Convention Center Sculpture Garden was vandalized.  It was knocked off of its base and broken into several pieces.  A nationally known conservator directed the restoration effort and last month the artwork was relocated to the Crocker Art Museum, located at 215 O Street in Sacramento. You may see the sculpture without paying an entry fee to the Museum.

Elizabeth Catlett was commissioned by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission in 1998. The 7' high, Mexican Limestone sculpture of a woman with crossed arms, a flowing skirt and gazing upwards celebrates the heroic strength and endurance of African-American and Mexican working-class women.  Historically, "Sojourner" is a reference to Sojourner Truth, the self-given name of Isabella Baumfree, an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist born into slavery in New York. She escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826 and after going to court to recover her son, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. Elizabeth Catlett Mora (April 15, 1915 - April 2, 2012) was an African American sculptor and printmaker whose remarkable career as an artist and activist was groundbreaking and significant. Art historian Melanie Herzog describes Catlett as "the foremost African American woman artist of her generation." Her long career spanned several political and social movements including the Chicago Renaissance of the 1940s, the Black Power and Black Arts movements of the 1960s, the Mexican Public Art Movement, and feminism, all of which influenced her art.

Decades: an exhibition about the generations opens at the SMUD Art Gallery, 6301 S Street, Sacramento, on Friday, September 19, 2014.

This series, sponsored by SMUD's Office of Inclusion, is designed to expose and educate SMUD employees about what it means to be part of a generation, as it relates to their colleagues and the community they serve.

The exhibition includes paintings, drawings, embroidery and mixed media artwork, by Sacramento area artists: Margaryta Chaplinska, Kinzie D'Brav Davis, Dante Declarador, Paul Dessau, Leslie DuPratt, Ianna Frisby, GOS", Matt Jurach, Melanie Marchant Meschery, Patrick Marasso, Frank Ordaz, Darby Patterson, David Peterson, and Abigail VanCannon. The work explores issues and ideas that span more than 7 decades from pop culture icons to the women's movement.
