Art of the Dumpster
Power Inn Alliance to Unveil Public Art Exhibit

 

This summer, discover what happens when dumpsters are transformed into unexpected artworks in the heart of Sacramento's business and transportation triangle.  Commissioned by Power Inn Alliance - an advocate for business, transportation and community - and curated by the Sacramento

Metropolitan Arts Commission, Art of the Dumpster celebrates the distinctiveness of the area with eye-popping designs on a very unusual canvas.

 

Beginning June 14, 2014, "Art of the Dumpster" will be open to the public to enjoy daily through August 30, 2014 at 3101 Power Inn Road Sacramento, CA 95826.

Cultural Arts Awards for Arts Organizations

The application and guidelines for the 2015-17 Cultural Arts Awards (CAA) grant cycle are now available. The CAA grant is open to nonprofit arts organizations who wish to receive general operating support. Go the the SMAC website for more information.

Bike Racks a Unique Addition

Ten bike racks designed by local architect and artist Jason A. Silva will be installed throughout Sacramento Council District 5 beginning May 1, 2014, 8:30 a.m. The installation launches "May is Bike Month" and is Sponsored by Sacramento City Councilmember Schenirer's office. This bike rack is the first in a "limited edition" series of bike racks uniquely designed by Silva to help define District 5.  More info>

"Make It An Arts Night" Campaign

SMAC, in partnership with the Convention & Visitor's Bureau have launched a new campaign to promote Sacramento365.com, the year-round source for Sacramento events.  The campaign consists of ads that feature the slogan "Make It An Arts Night".

Paper or Plastic? An exhibition of art made with recycled materials

opens at the SMUD Art Gallery, 6301 S Street, Sacramento on Friday, May 23, 2014.  The public is invited to meet the artists and view their work at a FREE reception on Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 4 to 6 p.m. 

 

Sacramento's Evolve the Gallery curated this exhibition of artwork, made with recycled materials, by artists Corey Pickett and Walter Lobyn Hamilton.  More info>

Arts Ed Directory imageThe Arts Commission, in partnership with the Kennedy Center's Arts for Any Given Child program is gathering information about arts education programming in Sacramento County. If you are an independent artist of any discipline who teaches your art form to students of any age in any setting, please complete our surveyfor teaching artists. Please pass along the link to anyone you may know who teaches their art form to students in Sacramento County.

 

If you are affiliated with an arts organization, please fill out the surveyfor arts organizations. Again, feel free to share the link with organizations who offer arts education in Sacramento County as part of their programming.

NEA GRANT RECIPIENTS
Congratulations to Instituto Mazatlan Bellas Artes, La Raza Galeria Posada and the B Street Theatre for receiving NEA grants.   

 

Crocker Art Museum and SMAC 

The Crocker Art Museum has been awarded an Exploring Engagement Fund grant from the James Irvine Foundation in support of an experimental, two-year initiative to grow participation.  SMAC will partner with the Crocker Art Museum to create the Social Practice Art workshops in conjunction with the project. 

 

PAL Awards

Congratulations to the three principals who won the PAL (Principal Arts Leadership) Award in the County April 15, 2014 for being outstanding leaders for arts education in their schools.  Sal Garcia of Dry Creek Elementary (Twin Rivers USD); Allegra Allesandri of George Washington Carver Arts and Science High School (Sacramento City USD); and Tiimmi Elcock of Deterding Elementary (San Juan USD). Keep up the good work!
