A Note From SMAC Exec. Director, Shelly Willis

As we wrap up 2013, I'd like to draw your attention to a very important Sacramento Metro Chamber initiative that will affect the growth and health of the arts in our community. I, along with a team of more than 20 individuals lead by Tim Youmans, Bill Blake, and Warren Smith have worked for more than a year to finalize a regional plan for civic amenities.  We are in the process of finalizing this strategic plan and need your help.  Please take a look at the attached letter and draft plan and submit your comments by DECEMBER 6, 2013 to Matt Yancey, Director of Economic Development: [email protected]

Here's wishing you a wonderful holiday season filled with art, poetry, theater, music and dance.

Shelly

The event will take place this Thursday, December 5, at 7:00 pm, California State University Sacramento (CSUS), Solano Hall, Room 2002.
SMAC & CADA Utility Boxes
Utility Box Vinyl Wrap Design Competition

The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission (SMAC) and The Capitol Area Development Authority (CADA) invite artists and artist teams residing in the Sacramento area to submit their qualifications for a Utility Box Vinyl Wrap Design Competition. The submission deadline is January 15, 2014. Artists will be selected based on past work and paid $500 to create a design that will be transferred to vinyl, and wrapped around a City of Sacramento Utility Box.
CADA's goal for funding this neighborhood project is to instill community pride, create highly visible public art and deter graffiti "tags" from appearing on the utility boxes.  Additionally, this project is about connecting artists with creative opportunities. To view the RFQ, click here.

Sacramento International Airport
Best U.S. Airports for Art

Sacramento International Airport placed 10th in USA Today's Readers' Choice contest for Best U.S. Airports for Art. The category focuses on how airports have been transforming from utilitarian hubs of transport to spaces with beautiful works of art, great restaurants, comfy lounges and terrific shopping.
The public art at Sacramento International Airport, including twelve artworks in Terminal B and six artworks in Terminal A, has also been featured recently in the Wall Street Journal.
