A Note from SMAC Executive Director, Shelly Willis

The importance of the arts to our local economy continues to weigh heavily on my mind, so much so, that I asked local free-lance writer Tim Foster to compile information and write an article that illustrates what this really means for Sacramento. Titled By the Numbers: Sacramento's Arts Economy, Foster's article is a must read (see below).

Make sure to take note of the artist opportunities below as well as a fascinating arts integration workshop and a panel featuring new media artists from Broadway Augmented, a temporary public art project.
By the Numbers: Sacramento's Arts Economy
An article by Tim Foster

Photo by Scott Duncan Conducted by Americans for the Arts in conjunction with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, and published in May, the Arts and Economic Prosperity IV study includes data culled from 111 regional arts and culture nonprofits, and interviews with over 1400 patrons at Sacramento arts and culture events. It is the most comprehensive study ever conducted on the subject. The results are eye-opening. To read Foster's complete article click here

Arts Integration Workshop
Featuring Kennedy Center Presenter Stuart Stotts

The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission is hosting a free arts integration workshop for artists and educators led by Kennedy Center presenter and singer/songwriter/educator, Stuart Stotts.  Titled "Arts Integration: The Kennedy Center Approach," the workshop uses a presentation, hands-on activities, and discussion to build an understanding of how active learning in the arts reinforces learning in other subject areas.   The workshop takes place on Saturday, November 16, from 9:00 am -12:30 pm as part of Friends of the Arts Commission's Arts for Any Given Child initiative. A perfect first step for artists interested in more work in the schools.  For more information click here or contact Laura Norman at 916 808-3979 or [email protected]. Del Paso Boulevard's "Words on Walls" Unveiled

A Temporary Art Project

Words on Walls

Five murals featuring poems about the Del Paso neighborhood were unveiled on Del Paso Boulevard between Arden Way and El Camino in October.  The murals are part of a temporary public art project titled "Words on Walls."  Sponsored by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and the Del Paso Blvd. Partnership, "Words on Walls" was created to help realize the goals and vision for rebuilding the Del Paso area into a design district and a distinct "destination" neighborhood.  The project also was an avenue for local poets and graphic designers to create temporary public art. The project will be up through May, 2014.  For more information about mural locations, poets and designers, go to http://www.sacmetroarts.org/PoetWall.html.  Photo: "Resurrect" Designer: Barbara Hennely, Poet: Catherine French.

Cesar Marches Again
A Re-dedication for a Beloved Public Artwork
Hosted by Councilmember Steve Hansen

The bronze sculpture, "Cesar Marching to Sacramento," which was removed from Cesar Chavez Plaza during the park's renovation, has returned. The work, by artist Lisa Reinertson, was originally installed in the Plaza in 2001. SMAC removed the sculpture in coordination with the redevelopment of the park.  The sculpture was re-dedicated at an event hosted by Sacramento City Councilman Steve Hansen on October 15.  As part of the celebration, Sacramento Poet Laureate Jeff Knorr read a poem by Jose Montoya and there were remarks by Cesar Chavez's niece, Becky Castro, Council Member Hansen, Supervisor Phil Serna, and the artist.   Photo: Artist Lisa Reinertson standing beside "Cesar Marching to Sacramento".
