New Common Core Guide

"Fundamentally, as a species, we need things that can fire our imagination, that can get our passions going, that can...give us a sense of meaning. And that is not a brick; it is not a pipe; it is an idea. That's what draws cities forward."

--- Edgar Pieterse, final words of the film Urbanized, directed by Gary Huswit

Greetings!

The last month has reminded me once again of what a rich and varied arts scene we have here in Sacramento. This is especially inspiring given the tough state of the economy. The KOLT Run Creations production of the play Vinegar Tom is a prime example of an innovative and imaginative use of resources. With the help of a very small Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission Microgrant, the play was produced in an empty and abandoned swimming pool in the basement of the Elks Tower in downtown Sacramento. I was riveted by the performances -- as was the sold-out audience -- despite an acoustically challenged and chilly environment and competition from a loud wedding taking place a few floors up. It was an experience I won't forget and it provided me with plenty of inspiration to get through the dark winter months.

Last spring the Arts Commission funded 44 projects, productions and events through our Micogrant program.   These grants - ranging in amount from $100 - $595 can be the difference between an artist, group of artists, or a small organization's success or failure. It's a small investment for an excellent return.  The program will be launched again in Spring 2013, providing the community with experiences that "fire our imagination" and artists with the opportunity to experiment.

The Blue Trees Blue Trees on 13th Street

by Konstantin Dimopoulos

Twenty Sycamore trees that line 13th Street between J and K Streets, were covered in eco-friendly blue pigment in October. The blue pigment used on the trees is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly product, similar to the paint used to mark sports fields. It is expected to stay on the trees for about six months.
