It's the start of the new year, a time that many think about new starts; improving in various dimensions of life, spirituality and love. Here are some thoughts about how to get started with financial planning.  It's easy!

In a recent Carl Richards (Behavior Gap) e-newsletter he compared thought processes of scientists and engineers.  You can read the details at his website here.

The takeaway for me that is helpful to share is this:

You can hide your money under the mattress waiting for the stars to align or

You can engage in the financial planning process, with the goal of gaining more information over time and refining your decisions.

The fact is financial planning is not an exact science.

It's also not an emergency.

It's not a self-help program - without trustworthy experts involved one may be worse off than doing nothing.

When you first get started, there will be a flurry of activity as you take care of some ignored high priority issues, but after that, it's "steady". Keep making gradual progress.

As I like to tell our firm's clients - "Don't panic; Rome wasn't built in a day."   Commit to 1) getting started and 2) making steady progress over time.

Our clients will tell you - the positive results come faster than you imagine!

What to Do Next

The crucial first step is to understand what is most important to you and establish goals in alignment.  Then choose someone that can bring a team of independent experts together and assemble the advice (prioritized in your best interests) to make it happen.

That said, it is completely appropriate to choose investing as the first topic.

We regularly analyze folk's current investment strategy with nothing expected in return.   (We'll analyze other aspects of your strategy if you wish.)

We look at:

  • Overall Performance (vs. benchmarks & our model portfolios)
  • Portfolio Design
  • Diversification
  • Fees & Expenses

Until next issue.
