"Obamacare" open enrollment begins 10/1/13!  What should you do?  Think before you leap!

Our expert health insurance provider knows insurance inside and out.  This is a great summary and advice from our expert.  This applies to people with Individual/Group, Medical-Medicare Supplements and Medicare Part D Plans.  Please share this with others so they make the smartest decisions.

The open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare", will begin October 1, 2013. If your current plan is "grand-fathered," which means you bought your plan prior to March 23, 2010, you can keep your existing coverage and provider network without making any changes. You will also be given the opportunity to enroll in one of the four levels of plans, either with or without a premium subsidy. If you qualify for a subsidy, we can help you enroll in the Covered California Exchange. If you don't qualify for a subsidy, we can help you enroll in plans outside the Exchange. Subsidies are only available for people that are within 133% and 400% of federal poverty level.

Plans purchased after March 23, 2010 are "non-grand-fathered," and will automatically be enrolled by their insurance carrier, into an Obamacare plan that is closest to their existing coverage. You will have the option to change to a different plan, if you would like other coverage, without any medical questions. The effective date of the new enrollment will take place January 1, 2014.

It is very important that you consider all your options, including network providers, plans, benefits and costs. Once you make your selection, you will be locked into your plan until the next open enrollment, which will be October 15, 2014. Only CIAs (Certified Insurance Advisors) can explain and compare plan benefits, options, networks, and the complexities of the Affordable Care plans. Our team's expert has completed extensive education and training to become a Certified Insurance Advisor to help you better understand the Exchange programs.

We will have all of the rates, benefits, subsidies and latest information on the Affordable Care plans. Please review the physician and hospital networks.  (We can help.) This is very important because there are many doctors and hospitals that are not accepting the new Obamacare plans. You may want to stay on your current grand-fathered plan in order to keep your existing network. We can help you match the right plan that would include your personal doctors and hospital.

What to Do Next

The crucial first step is to understand what is most important to you and establish goals in alignment.  Then choose someone that can bring a team of independent experts together and assemble the advice (prioritized in your best interests) to make it happen.

That said, it is completely appropriate to choose investing as the first topic.

We regularly analyze folk's current investment strategy with nothing expected in return.   (We'll analyze other aspects of your strategy if you wish.)

We look at:

  • Overall Performance (vs. benchmarks & our model portfolios)
  • Portfolio Design
  • Diversification
  • Fees & Expenses

Until next issue.
